couple cool photos

DMong Feb 02, 2010 11:20 PM

One of the "classic" patterned females taken last year as a juvenile. She has WAAAY more interband speckling now, and almost looks hypomelanistic compared to the other two.

Just had to show-off this years holdback extreme male too

A pic of a double het(snow)I took just prior to selling last week

an old Cal.king pic I recently found of a breeder male I had many years ago when he was a sub-adult

That they are bro! I really hope they produce for you this year, that would be way cool. I still have another year to go with OBK's before breeding.

Mine are a year and a half old. I don't know the exact grams of the females, something I have to do when I bring them out. I'll try and get some pics posted of them.

They aren't gigantic, being only '08's too, but are very good-sized for their age for sure. The two females last time I weighed them were about 410 grams, and close to 40 inches. The male is much smaller, because he is not quite as an agressive feeder as the other's, and he likes the meals a bit smaller too, but he does take multiple meals, so that is a good thing. He is absolutely fine and healthy just the same, just not the monsters the other two females are for their age. OBK's don't seem to grow quite as fast as say floridana do.

I still think they might be a bit small for this year, but if they start eating like champs up until breeding time, I will make the call then.

Thanks Doug, very cool! Both my males and females are about 38'' and all are ravenous feeders, but they do seem to grow in spurts. Do hope they breed for you, they are awesome kings!

Doug, if he's chocolate and white, that cal king looks exactly like the one I picked up at the Leon County animal shelter a few weeks ago.

Very cool Amy!,.......well, he was VERY, VERY dark chocolate brown(almost black), but not quite. I sold him 12 or so years ago, so who knows how many hands he went through..LOL!. I will say though, that the photo of him certainly has enough identifying markings to positively ID one way or the other to the one you have. I would FLIP if that was actually him!

Good luck with yours, wherever it came from. So many snakes(and other animals too) get constantly neglected out there, and it upsets me to no end!. Glad your snake is now being well cared for now

I'm sure it isn't the same snake. But, I will check the markings on my guy just for fun.

This guy was well cared for, just surrendered by owners who had to move or something like that. He is very tame and LOVES to eat!

I have a choc and yellow female I got from the shelter, too. She had been starved - left in a vacant apartment. The shelter did a really good job of putting some weight on her before I got her, but she was still thin. Now she's a real fatty.

Love that OB king by the way!

Thanks for the OBK compliment Amy.

That is great to hear that your other rescue is good and healthy now. I would like to punch those people in the head who left it there to die in the apartment, when it could have EASILY been given away to almost anyone.........GEEESH!!!

Awesome Doug. I love that obx and the great contrast of the black and white cali. Did he hold his contrast into adulthood?

DMong Feb 03, 2010 11:16 AM

Thanks Joe!,....

Yes, him and the female breeder I matched him up with were insanely contrasty. About 15 years ago, I traded some corn morphs I produced to a local reptile shop I saw him in, and the killer female was painstakingly hunted down when the Expo was held in Orlando. I chose THE cleanest, purest white, purest jet-black female available there, and it took the entire afternoon of looking and comparing. I even looked for a very white belly, not beige or cream, and the lightest colored skin between the scales..LOL!, and came up with this one that I have posted here before now and then. At that time, she was definitely one of the nicest 50-50's I had ever seen. I later bred her to another killer 50-50 male, and produced some insane-looking offspring from them.

Man!,...I wish to heck I had some pictures of them!....ARRRGH!

As you know, jet black kings with pure snow white bands are probably my favorites. It's not easy to find ones that keep that contrast into adulthood either.( As you know.) My conjunctas are keeping theirs and hopefully will continue to do so. Love that 50/50 though!! Killer.

DMong Feb 03, 2010 01:20 PM

Thanks buddy!,.....yes, I certainly know what you mean.

Were those not from Shannon Brown's conjuncta line?

I remember yours were very nice,...wherever they where from

Doug, Jerry picked them up for me and had given me the history but my dumb a-- did not write it down. I will have to ask him again.

DMong Feb 03, 2010 06:10 PM

Ahh!!,.....in that case Joe, I'm betting it is indeed Shannon's line,....but I have been wrong at least once before in my life though..LOL!

Thanks Rainer!..

Well, the snake was taken upstairs, and put on a very smoothed-out dark T-shirt on the floor of the upstairs loft where a good amount of filtered light comes in from a big window(not directly on the subject though), then I set the camera for a moderately low "fill flash" as to not wash it out. The tubular shadowed look is called "vignette", and is a feature of many photo programs, but this particular one was one featured in Photobucket itself. There is alot of weird "bells and whistles" you can do to things, it just takes some digging around in it's depths to even discover the things, or they go virtually unnoticed by most people...LOL!

Glad you liked those man!

WoW cool man thanks!!

A T-shirt huh! lol!

I've got to get more creative with lighting and learning to do things with a camera like using the low flash (?) functions.

I feel like such a dufus.

Don't feel like a dufus man, I get alot of very crappy results still too, it is really about trial and error, and experimenting with lots of different settings and combinations. Actually, flat black frame "matting" is fabulous for this sort of thing too, because it absorbs the light, and doesn't make a crappy reflection, just a nice soft, dark neutral background so the animal itself stands out.

Cloth can really hold light-colored tint too, just as the T-shirt did in my shot, but I didn't even plan on using it for a "showcase" pic, I just wanted to get a half decent shot to show a buyer what he was getting, but then later saw that when the "vignette" feature was used with the photo, it turned out pretty cool lookin..LOL!

Thanks Billy!,....I am going to post a few pics of both the adult brooks I took today, they're pretty crappy pics actually, but they were spur of the moment pics after they both shed, and they are pretty tough to shoot and hold at the same time,...ESPECIALLY the male!!!,...geeez!, even as it is, I am holding my long a$$ arms out all the way, with the camera in back of my freakin head to get in-hand shots of him anymore!..LOL!....he's a real "live-wire" to mange with one hand now..LOL!

Oh!, I'm also gonna post one of my all-time favorite pics of the aberrant OBK when she was a small juvenile here shortly too.

later man!, ~Doug
