Baird's Mostly Nocturnal?

Ameron Feb 03, 2010 12:47 AM

Most online literature does not really specify, but I see hints that they may be largely nocturnal. (Usually true of desert & scrubland species at that latitude.)

I see prior posts indicating that this may be the favorite Rat Snake of all for Forum posters (second maybe the Gray Rat Snake?), but are yours typically active mostly during the day, night or both?

How about curiosity levels??

At the risk of wearing this out ...I have only one male. He is very much daytime active, especially when his mate seeking impulse is triggered, and not at all shy. I often let him out in my snake room/office and he crawls all over high and low. In fact he almost seems attracted to me as I sit at the computer, even to the point of being a pest he crawls over my keyboard as I'm typing! Of course when in girl chasing mode he is a reluctant feeder but other than that he is the ultimate snake...and at 2 1/2 years old and almost 6 feet, his color is still changing...shifting yellow up front and getting more and more orange flame mid to rear. When you pick him up he will coil around your neck and hang...you just can't beat it!

Across the years, I've seen your posts here, and on the King & Milk forums. Your comments are helpful & educational. You seem like a likable guy, too.

BTW, I once lived in SoCal for 10 years. Six years in Orange County (many locations), four years in Long Beach. I relocated to Portland from Long Beach in 1990. (Part of a wave of 500,000 Californians who moved to OR that year.)

This info is very helpful. I'm interested in getting either a Baird's or a Texas. (I know; the latter can be very aggressive. I'm more interested in activity & curiosity levels than initial temperament. I often seek the more "spirited" individuals, and know how to work with them.)

If I get either, I'll post to let you know how things progress.

Thanks for the nice compliment Ameron. I try to keep in mind that all levels of keepers use this forum, from totally uninitiated to super pros, and so try to address questions directly and explicitly. It's part to my dues for learning so much here and also to keep the the forum lively.

btw, I've got an '09 gaigiae too...super tame, great feeder and growing like a weed!

Would like to see a pic of your Carlsbad King?

Cheers,
Brad

In the wild, it depends on the time of year, but they are both diurnal and nocturnal.

My cb bairdi is active day & night.
And is insanely curious & alert. Only other snake I ever saw like that was a Green Mamba! Seriously! LOL
Its the reason I've fallen in love with the species.

My Mexicans are a little shy, but my Draybar specials and my Davis Mt. bairdi are dog tame and come out to see what I'm up to.

Like Todd, I also have a pair of Draybar specials. Mine can be active both in the day, or night. Steve

Ditto. Mine is the same way. In fact, is watching the cornsnake ignore another mouse ( its off its feed) & hoping I'll feel sorry for him.
Just like a freaking puppy! LOL
