Just want to make sure I understand

There is no way to correctly find the sex of a corn by any particular part of the snake (eg. body, scales, vent, other markings, etc.), right?

I'm about to start looking for a local herp vet that can do it for me, properly. Thought i'd ask, to make sure I can't do it.

Most experienced keepers can tell the sex of a snake by just looking at the underside of the tail most of the time. The shape just rearward of the vent(cloaca), and the length of the tail in relation to the snake as well. in young snakes they are easily sexed by a technique known as "popping", and older ones with much more muscle tone by "probing" with a thin lubricated stainless steel rod.

Here is a link with pics and videos to explain in detail exactly how to do this. This is extremely easy to do, but if done incorrectly, you can easily permanently injure the snake. I have even known of some to even kill the snakes from excessive crushing trauma, so check out these techniques carefully in this link, and be confident that you understand the process very well before attempting to do this. I have shown many people how to do this over the years, and it is really very simple and straight-forward once you know how to do it, and why.

good luck!, and here is the link

I just popped my creamsicle corn for the first time and it appears to be a male to me. I have one quick question though. In the video that you posted a link to it showed the male with red hemipenes but my snake's showed white, does that make a difference?

DMong Feb 07, 2010 03:36 PM

Yes, they can be different colored, depending on the amount of blood that is there and gets pushed into the hemipene's(two, or bi-penises). As long as you saw two small "tubes" protrude outward, it is definitely a male(regardless of the color, but if you saw nothing, or two dots(usually red in color), it is a female. Unless of course it was not done correctly, then a female can sometimes be mistaken for a female, but when you see the hemipenes on each side pop out, it is impossible to mistake THEM as a female..LOL!

BTW, the two dots on each side that are sometimes seen in females when popped, those are the scent glands that are responsible for releasing sexual pheromones during mating season.

.... A male can sometimes be mistaken for a female if done incorrectly and they don't pop out, but NOT the other way around..

Hate when I screw up when typing!!....ARRRGH!
