Headlamps...

rwindmann Feb 05, 2010 04:09 PM

About to go pick up a princeton tec apex pro - unless you fine gents have another recommendation.

What's the difference between burn time and total burn time? On the apex pro, it lists the total burn time of 200 hours, but even when you choose the weakest beam using the simulator on their website, it still does not last 200 hours...

You can't go wrong with the Apex headlamp. But be aware there are two styles, one runs on AA batteries, and the pro runs on the more expensive and harder to find CR123 style battery.

Also, you should consider the Fenix HP10 headlamp. It is newer to the market so not many people have used it. However the ones that have can say nothing but great things about it. And for the record I have used an Apex headlamp for years, but will likely get a HP10 this spring myself.

HP10

But either way, Apex or Fenix you will get a great headlamp, just make note of what kind of battery you will be feeding it. I like the AA style myself even though they may not run as long on a set of batteries because AA's are easy to get your hands on than the CR123 and far cheaper as fuel.

And while you are getting the headlamp do not overlook a good flashlight. They put out more light and used with a headlamp you wash away the shadows by having two light light sources from different angles. In my opinion this works much better than a stubby type setup and you do not have to lug around that giant 12 volt battery.

I personally like all the Princeton Tec products. They're top of the line but pricy.

600 lumens 4.5 hrs runtime, but it cost $350. They also have a 1200 lumen light that is supposed to be like a cars headlamp.

lbenton Feb 07, 2010 12:21 PM

I am afraid to look for it because I am betting I will get lots of info on KITT and "The Hoff"

i tried it out and its pretty amazing. If I were going to buy one though, Id shell out the extra money for the 1200. Might as well have it look like the sun is out.

I guess you mount it to bike helmet then? Looks like it uses a lipo style battery, how much are extras?

except the headband mount, which is an extra 30 bucks. The battery is the size of a remote control, you can carry it in your pocket.

lbenton Feb 09, 2010 09:10 AM

... I mean extra batteries to pack out as spares, you said a 4 hour run time? A full night of walking would have you needing two, maybe a bit of the third battery if you can hold up to anything past the 8 hour mark.

for more than 4 hours, youre a badass. We Californians probably wander around the desert at night more than herpers from any other state, likely a product of the amount of public lands. Ive rarely been able to hike/hunt for more than 4 or 5 hours. Regardless, the light will run at 300 lumens for 8 hours, and its got a power meter. If I see that Im getting low, I can kick it down a notch, and still have more light than just about every other light out there. I really dont think I will need another battery.

rwindmann Feb 09, 2010 06:49 PM

Last trip 8:30ish/9 to 5/5:30 every single night last trip.

C'mon, you can DO IT!

CMSMITH Feb 09, 2010 07:07 PM

all night. How'd all that walking work out for you?

rwindmann Feb 09, 2010 07:51 PM

Three nights, one snake.

I will give you this - another guy driving picked up two in the same time.

CMSMITH Feb 09, 2010 09:17 PM

you in. Not looking for specifics. I found seven, 2 were dor, over the course of 24 nights. Looks like walking works well for you.

rwindmann Feb 10, 2010 07:59 AM

Generally speaking, Sanderson.

stevenxowens792 Feb 11, 2010 05:30 PM

What are you talking about? Lance is about to keel over after a short sprint to observe some orange and gray... LOL

But... I think 8 hours of 1200 lumens is better than 4 hours.
So an extra battery can't hurt. Plus it ALWAYS pays to have a backup. And a backup to the backup.

Thanks for providing the link!

Best Wishes,

StevenX

As always, thanks Lance and crew - I really appreciate it! Last season, the big lesson I learned is that I didn't have the proper lamp gear, so I need to fix that this year. I Plan to do a lot hunting in the outback this year (camping non-protected public lands), and the bottom line is how many batteries I want to carry around. It seems to make sense to save the money and get the regular Apex, and carry the extra batteries in my camelback. In the end though, I might just break down and get the 8 AA Apex model. And Lance, you are right, I plan in bringing a flashlight just the same.

Again guys, thanks for the great response.

I find that the flashlight running along with the headlamp is way better... use both at once, worth the extra battery you have to burn.

Something else to consider; Princeton Tec and Fenix are herper (specifically HCU) friendly. One of the big wigs at Princeton is a herper himself.

I think I remember Daniel (the owner of Fenix Outfitters) mentioning a discount for HCU members. I'll point him in the direction of this thread so either he can answer or if he chooses, I'll answer for him. Many of us have dealt with him. He and Fenix Lights have been very supportive or herpers.

I think you guys have sold me on the HP10.

Some guys here said that the Apex was too expensive - I was able to find the Apex Extreme for $51.00 online, just as a FYI.

It's only a 1W Luxeon, but c'mon were in a recession and it can be had for only $7.95!!! Digitally regulated and a great review at http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/nuwai_hlx-712l.htm

They're so cheap - I might pick up a few for X-MAS gifts...lol.

I have been using the H30-Q5 and really like it. It can run off RCR123s so as long as you have some extra cells charged, you are good to go.

I might get the 18650 version sometime soon to try out as well.
