Chinese Beauties

tbrock Feb 06, 2010 11:42 AM

My favorite snake, a big female calico! I hope to get another good clutch from this girl, this year. She is still in the fridge, right now - warming up in a couple weeks.

The same clutch just after hatching.

One of my keepers, a male - at about 3 months old.

And - I hope to breed this pair, and get some double hets. The male (calico) has put on some size, and is brumating in the refrigerator for the first time, this year.

Haha! That's the best description of their look I've heard, so far! Like jalapeno cornbread - they'd go great with some chili and cerveza. LOL

Toby, that big female is easily the best looking calico taeniurus I've ever seen. Her colors are outstanding; and she throws some nice babies too, as witnessed by that good looking young male you showed. Another benny is that the normal looking offspring are great looking too.

You sure tempt me every time you show that group...

Thanks, Terry - I agree! She is also a very BIG girl, these days - at the upper end of maximum size Chinese beauties are supposed to attain...

They are my favorite snakes, and I've decided to keep the line going, and will soon attempt to outcross it. If all goes well, I hope to produce lots of these, in the future. Let me know when you want to get back into them - hopefully a good year on the way.

I'd love to get back into them, but I'm cramped for space right now. Maybe in another year I'll have everything figured out better.

PS: So many species, so little time...LOL!

Know what you mean! My snake room really will be just that, soon - no more computer or books, just cages, racks, and necessities on a set of shelves. The beauties take up a lot of space in my room too, since I keep them in large cages. I have been narrowing my focus to mostly smaller species, for the last year or so. Hoping to get into at least one other small / medium Asian - maybe this year.

I like the Mandarins, Toby. Maybe we could work together on a group?

I really like the look of Mandarins, Terry - but my problem is having horrible conditions for brumation. It has been a cold winter (for south Texas), but still not cold enough for most of the temperate zone Asians. I had my refrigerator full, this year, and that was after giving the Leopards to John Lassiter, to brumate (and see if he can work some magic with them).

I'm looking at snakes which might tolerate a warmish and fairly short brumation. The species I have been thinking about are: Gonyosoma frenatum, G. prasinum, Rynchophis boulengeri, and Oreocryptophis porphyraceus latacinctus.

I understand, Toby. I can work with more of the cool adapted species here. Maybe in the future I'll give them another shot. First things first though. I'm starting some alterna and others next year.

Or, I might try keeping a Coelognathus species, since they seem like they need no brumation.

Those alterna look really cool, but I have avoided getting bitten by that bug. LOL Best of luck with them.
