Crazy Male Behavior?

ghost5967 Feb 06, 2010 12:13 PM

This is my first year breeding, and I am seeing some really strange behavior from one of my males. He is going nuts in his cage. He is in a Freedom Breeder rack. He is a het stripe and I have been pairing him with a stripe and another het stripe since November. I have witnessed several locks and now the females seem to be rejecting his advances. He is just tearing his cage apart, knocking over his water, moving is hide, and tearing up the paper on the bottom. Is this normal? Is it because he is picking up the scent of the other snakes in the rack, making him want to breed more? If so, is it the scent of the other females or males? Would now be a good time to put him with some of my less enthuastic breeders for a little sparring session? Any input is appreciated.

I haven't starting breeding just yet, but I have experienced males with this type of behavior. I had two adult males, well into breeding size, right next to one another in a rack. When my sub-adult females came into "season", both males were constantly trouble. Tipped water, bedding shoved to the front or back of the cage, and even got a little interesting to handle. I moved one of the males the bottom of the rack and the behavior slowed and stopped. So my suggestion is that he might be "smelling" the other males. You could try moving him, but it might not help. He may just be trouble for a while Welcome to breeding though!
