Grate article on Cubans Tom !

emysbreeder Feb 06, 2010 10:42 PM

So, your a good writer too! You did a grate job and its not as easy as it looks to write about an animal you have decades working with. Nicely compressed (the part I cant seem to do) but with all the information. Grate pics too. I was at your first presentation on the first breeding of them or lewisi in OK.City in 1981 5th reptile Sym. Still have the T-shirt. That talk was one of the reasons I do what I do. Vic Morgan

I guess I should have said that it is in the new Reptiles Mag. Apr.2010. He has another in I believe this months Playboy. Vic

I stopped subscribing to Reptiles mag a fews years ago, but will try to find it since I always like reading about cyclura. I will also pick up this months Playboy also to read that spread titled "Hot Reptile Breeders of Florida's South Coast". Please tell me Tom your wearing at least a fig leaf!

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Feb 09, 2010 06:08 AM

Actually I believe it was the Dec issue and it was about the Burmese Python issue here. I told them NO NUDES AS I'M TOO FAT AND TOO OLD..LOL..They did do pictures however. I surely never would have dreamed that I'd ever be in Playboy when as a 12 year old I began sneaking peeks at it whenever possible..

I finally got my copy. Nice article Tom. I can see that if you are not up in your cyclura those images are misleading. One thing that bugs me about Reptiles species profiles is that dont give enough room for the author to describe more about the animals personality and what its like to keep one. Its just temp, food and breeding. I am exaggerating to make my point. Its not just Toms article, its all of them. Since most dont breed wouldnt you rather know more about what its like to keep one. just a thought

A couple years ago I sw one of these articles on chuckwallas. I keep about 30 or so and I had to laugh because after reading the article I thought it should be mentioned what pigs they are. Crapping all over one another and rubbing the crap all over the cage. Breaking down cages on a schedule and scrubbing thousands of pounds of rocks especially on a 30 degree day in December. Sifting sand weekly and what it does for allergies. Of course there are the positives too which I think you were talking about.

I remember a few years back I had a yearling lewisi hybrid that was just a beast. I took him out to show a friend and he launched himself onto his wife's face and layed open her nose with his nails. I mean I think about it now and it makes me laugh but man at the time there was blood everywhere.

Just little anectdotes to give people a little taste of what it is like to actually keep these guys.

I wanted to do just that and I agree but I was limited in the amount of words I could use...Thanks

I really enjoyed the article and pictures Tom. I didnt know Cubans could be blue like that. Bob

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Feb 09, 2010 08:15 AM

That's because their not. I sent a LOT of pics for them to choose from all carefully labled and identified as to species. What was not published was the staus quo on a species by species account they asked for. Because of that I sent pics of many species and some got published but WITHOUT identifying them. They posted pics of lewisi, n. caymanensis, hybrid lewisi, and ricordi with NO identification leading the average person to believe their nubila...

I was actually going to comment on that, but figured it was a Reptiles mistake. They are constantly making errors, some ofwhich are to my advantage based on all of the contests thats I have won and all the free stuff Nice and blue though.

Luke Snyder Feb 10, 2010 11:16 AM

Alot of the pictures look like animals with lewsi blood, in my opinion. Ive never seen pics of pure cubans that are as blue as some of the animals pictured in that article. Just an observation.

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Feb 13, 2010 04:02 AM

I'm not pulling it out yet. It's already white but with a tan look's o.k. but the bald look I might not pull off well...LOL
