scenting pinkies

mossman Sep 20, 2003 02:18 AM

I have a few newly hatched grey band kingsnakes and a couple of Nuevo Leon kingsnakes that hatched about a month ago. As of yet none of them eaten. I live in Florida and getting anoles and turkish geckos foir scenting pinkies is not a problem. I have tried putting the pinks in a small cup w/ the lizards, rubbing the mice all over the pinkies, and rubbed them all over w/ the sheds from both types of lizards. Is tgere a better way to get the scent on the mice? If so please let me know.

Also, I am worried that they are going to long w/o eating. What is the max amount of time I should wait before trying something else like a pinky pump or force feeding? Any help would be fantastic. Tahnsk

Wash the pinky first in water (I'd use a killed or thawed pinky), then get the anole to _bite_ the pinky and hold on for a bit (usually not a problem once the anole bites). This has worked well for a lively young speckled kingsnake we caught (it was used to lizards). I've now weaned it to thawed pinkies without the lizard biting first--I only had to use the anole trick 2 or 3 times.

If your going to force feed, try mouse tails about 1 to 2incheslong.Incert cut end first, about half way,an then let the snake finish on its own.Do this a few times ,4 or 5 days apart, then try a pink.
