A high protein dog food and some hamster mix works just fine! I've had rodents coming out of my ears for years ( hey, that rymes)!

The shape of the blocks isn't a way to compare quality. Many lab blocks look all the same, but its what they contain that is important. Check the nutrient contents of that sow stuff (or do you mean soy?)

But if you have been having great results with the Mazuri blocks, stick with it, unless you are hoping to get the same quality at less cost.

It depends on what you are breeding. Mice require more grain-based foods in their diet than do rats. Rats also usually require a higher protein and fat content in their food than mice in order to produce good litters and breed on time. What do you have and how aggressively do you breed them?

and feed a food specifically designed for breeding mice and/or rats. It's the only way to assure the best production.

I have fed mazuri, teklabs, high fat rat, forti diet, seed mixes with other rat blocks.. none of them gave me the size and production numbers that the Old Roy does. I have not been feeding long enough to find out what negatives there are as to life span or long term health effects, but this was recomended by a friend and long time rat breeder. It turned up my production by 40% and my rats are much bigger from the get go.

Science diet is the best I have found for bigger babies and younger breedings. But I feel its too greasy so I switched to a all natural brand it costs alot 67 dollars for 28 pounds. The name is EVO I get it a from a store called almost wild. they have all natural stuff for animals.

I feed mine dog food...and I can't get them to stop breeding.
I traded 45 live rats for a Colombian Rainbow boa, and just gave away 30 rats...and that was NOT trying to breed them. Haha.

My females can drop 20 babies with no issues.

Harlan or Purina lab block with Volkmann rodent diet on top of the block. The Volkmann is seeds, grains, nuts, corn, etc. The mice will pull the Volkmann through as they rotate/eat the block.

My mice and my BP's grow fast and my mouse mom's stay fat while nursing and have big litters. I only feed mice to my BP's and they do great and are breeding in their 3rd year.
