Metabolic bone disease and light

snakeguyVicBC Sep 20, 2003 02:34 AM

I adopted 4 Water drags over the last month and they have a nice environment but one in in serious condition from MBD. I know a powersun bulb from zoo med would be a definate way to go, but what does everyone know about the ESU bulb from (cant remember sorry).
Im pumping him full of mice and healthy cricks. What more could I do?

Well, first off, make sure your dusting those crickets with some calcium powder. I don't really know about the ESU bulbs, but I doubt there even powerful enough to be used. Like with flourecent bulbs, they only have a range of about a foot. I think the powersuns have a 6 foot range or larger. Also make sure to have a large enclosure, im hoping you do with 4 water dragons.... I have one in a 6 x 4 x 2. Powersuns and similar bulbs are designed for large enclosures like that, its also the only bulb I use. I have a basking bulb, but things get in the 100's if I have both on. Talk to a vet for advice though, if your sure it has MBD

I use Repcal-both calcium and herptivite. It is really the best out there for the purpose im using them for. I also treat my crickets real well, gut loading them with several "Fluker" products (so most of the process happens within the cricket). I have the ESU bulb mounted through the top hanging down into the cage about 6 inches away from their basking place. When we tested a powersun- it measured to nearly a metre. My enclosure is 3h 4l 3w.....cant 100degree be fatal to an asian water dragon?
Im pretty sure the one has MBD cuz of the rubbery limbs (legs draging behind/toes twisted/swollen jaw). Does anyone else know about any other strategies or lighting.

I agree with everone above do not rely on lighting alone, use a dietary suppliment. If it has advanced that far you should see a vet. As far as lighting is concerned the absolute best thing you can do is daily exposure to unfiltered natural sunlight. That's a hundred times better then any lamp!
