How often does failed breeding occur?

kevinvs Feb 08, 2010 12:12 PM

I have never bred Ball Pythons, but I am planning on doing so next season. Is there any chance that the male or female cannot breed successfully ever, granted they are the proper size and in good health? Basically, is there any chance that they cant figure out how to get the job done?

I have had snakes that I have paired up and they will refuse to breed each other but they will readily breed others.

I have a snake that will only breed big girls and another that likes them small - I have one that doesn't like any of my bumblebee girls.

I have paired up a male with a female for three years before they finally locked. Recessive project gone to waste.

I've paired up snakes that readily bred (locked up) for years but didn't produce until their 4th year. Yet another recessive project gone to waste.

So if you are asking can it happen - yes - but most often you pair them up, they breed and produce eggs.

I would guesstimate from my experiences and those of breeders I have spoken with, abut 50-75% of pairings lead to healthy hatched babies.

......I'd agree with the 50% to 75% results,,,

depends on numbers....I used to breed like 11 girls...and get 10 to lay...one year 27 girls maybe and had like 21 lay...other years like 28 girls and get 17 clutches...?.....

the less you have the more time you spend on each pair and each snake......the more you have the more it's just throw together and switch and switch and feed.....feed feed....

.....I have as Tosha said...some snakes tht will not copulate at all...then throw in a dofferent male or female and bam...done...

,.....keep throwing them together....till you get eggs...that's when you know it took....when you see them....
