Feeding frogs to ribbon snakes?

Partisan Sep 20, 2003 06:11 AM

Alright, I have a ribbon snake (western, I think, since i live in NJ and got it from a pet shop and according the people there they don't sell local critters), and have been feedin him rosies. However, I understand they also like froggies. Now, I keep hearing "Don't feed them frogs! PARASITES! PARASITES!PARASITES!" like a bad church sermon, but I get to thinking, in the wild, these snakes eat frogs and seem to survive. My big question is, if I AM going to feed him frogs, what type should I feed him?

Also, can someone please list what fish are needed to maintain a proper balance of vitamins and other such substances, since I keep hearing that a rosy only diet is harmful?

Do they survive? How do you know how many die? This analogy doesn't work at all. That is like saying...Well, anacondas eat deer in the wild, so lets toss deer in with the snakes. Once you take an animal out of the wild, the conditions no longer apply. Therefore, saying that you can feed it frogs because they eat frogs in the wild doesn't work at all. Many WC ribbons do have parasites, and if gone untreated, the ribbons can die quickly. The fact is, unless you want to go and pay for lots of flagyl or panacur you should probably leave the frogs be. Rosies as a diet are bad, if you have not gathered that already. Search the forum for Thiamin and Thiaminase. Get it on a better diet. Andy
