Pix - Statute of limitations?

tcdrover Feb 10, 2010 09:13 AM

Is there a time limit that you have before deciding that a pair
just aren't good together?

These pairs aren't the ones I'm asking about.
I've had a couple together since the start of November and it
still doesn't look like they are done. I continue to see them
copulating on & off. The male is more than old and large enough.

How does the age of the male affect their viability?
If they are too young but copulate what happens, does the female
have slugs or just never ovulate?

I usually pair them up for about 4 days to a week. If nothing is going on they get split then re-introduced around 4 weeks later.

I've got two pairings I'm trying for that so far the males show no interest, they are both un-proven males and one is an '08 so still young. Tried once with the females (one female is proven, the other is virgin) and so far, nothing. I'm going to re-introduce in another week. I'll give them 3 shots and if nothing is going on, call it quits on that pairing.

Could very well be! One of my pairs went together 10/12 and were courting off and on all the way til the end of Jan, she just had her POS 2/5 and I split them up 2/6. That's almost 4 months of courting/breeding (they both immedietly shed after introduction as well).

I can't speak from experience but what I've read and seen happen with other species, the female slugs out.

Good luck with your pairings, that last pair you posted has me on the edge of my seat!

Thanks, I fully expect to see some stripes this time around.
Those are both hypo harlequins. They like like twins almost.
They're not directly related.

It's curious, the difference in breeding times between boas.

Some are done relatively quickly and some seem to take 3-4
months. I've been doing this for a number of years & I guess I've
just been lucky. I've had 4 previous litters and they were all
done within a couple of months.

I need to get a baby rack. I may hit on 6-7 of these.
I'm hoping for some jungle moonglows and jungle snows.

It is so weird how long some of them seem 'to take'... I have a bunch of slow breeders over here, mine always seem to take 2-4 months. What the heck! Don't they know I have no patience?!

SWEEEEETTTT! (but honestly I am more looking forward to seeing the STRIPED harlequins you're going to produce)

Have a good one,
