Female Laying Problems

geckogirl72 Sep 20, 2003 09:06 AM

My female standings does not seem to understand what to do with her eggs once she lays them. She laid her first set of infertile eggs and they were both broken on the substrate. A few months later she laid one large and very white egg, but it was broken on the substrate. My theory is, she's just dropping them out like if she were having a bowel movement because there is streaking on the glass from up high right above where she laid them. The eggs look flattened and a portion is ripped as though they're being dropped and breaking from the fall. I don't think it's a calcium issue because I always keep some in a dish in the tank for her. Any suggestions as to how I can prevent this? She's almost 2 years, will it come with experience?

Thanks,
Lisa

I have the same problem with one of my Leo's. She drops her eggs all over the place. As if she just poops them out lol
What a silly nilly she is. All of my other leo's like to lay their eggs in the hides i put in there for them....but not this one girl!!! nooooooo she pops them out as she walks.. pops one out when she poops... you name it... i have to watch her closely or she steps on them and squash...she never ever digs either.
Good luck and let me know if you ever break her from that habit. I hope this new season my girl discovers the hides and does it right. Or I'll have another season of scrambled eggs lol

For my standingi I hang laying tubes made of 2inch ABS plumbing pipe, with removable caps on the bottom. About 8-10 inches long with a small hole cut through one side about 4 inches from the top for ease of entry by the female. The whole contraption is hung about midheight in the viv. I use this sort of unit for all my phelsuma works great. One final modification is a small mound of molding compound in the middle of the inside of the bottom cap that encourages the egg to roll to one side of the bottom and stay there when the tube is checked for eggs. (Does that make any sense I'm not sure.) I'll send you pic's if you would like.

You got it,It'll take a day or two, kinda busy just now.

Okay Geckogirl I hope this works. First pic's of the whole thing.
Second is of the mound that makes the egg roll to the side and stay there. I think I'll have to make 2 posts (i'm a computer dork).

Thanks so much for the pictures. I'll have to try it. Did your female know to lay in the tube right away?

lizardhut42 Sep 24, 2003 09:30 PM

My females understood the function of the tubes right away. However I have 1 female Grandis that refuses to use the tube at all. I just found a pair of eggs hidden under some leaves. In addition to which shes laid them in planters and other places in the enclosure. Hope the pics help.
