Practical elevated humidity experiments

BobS Feb 12, 2010 01:42 PM

I always admire folks like Mark who are always trying to experiment with better ways of doing things rather than me just doing what I've done for years..

These are a few things that I have been experimenting with after listening to many of your posts over the last long while. Thanks to all of you who have shared.

There is a small waterbowl in there that is obscured by all the Pyros that like to squish in there.(3) But the interior is DRY. NO skin problems and have been doing this for a long while now rather than messing with dampening moss and worrying about skin problems,fungus/mold issues and it's easier for me and lasts MUCH longer.

For larger Kings I'm experimenting with these. Of course every cage needs a waterbowl,I'm just enclosing it in a shoe box with a hole. Practical? I keep it on the cool side rather than over heated side and am not having mold/fungus issues as I have had when putting moist hides over heat.

Thanks for looking.

So dry (surface) but humid - Bob, that is probably the best for the snakes. Probably how it is in a burrow. Good on you. I enjoy seeing your setups. Mine look like a mad scientist setup lol.

Great Ideas and experiments Bob....

I theoretically achieve the same thing with these old Drawer Enclosures......The availability of humidity has proved to boost the feeding response of all my mexicana kings.....

I hate racks, but due to space I had to build one.....I wanted to provide all the options these drawer enclosures provided so...
I will have a new "tub insert" set up that will provide all the options these drawer enclosure provide all within a Rubbermaid or Sterilite Tub.......
I believe I will be able to share some pics of them in a week or so.....They are going to the manufacturer next week....I am going to try out 40 of them soon......

Very impressive post. Very nice and clean settups and that is one healthy looking brooks!

I do the same with bowls inside boxes. The bennefits are two fold. One the box lid keeps the bowl from tipping and if the snake gets in the bowl and overflows it I don't end up with a lot of over moist bedding. The other is that it contains the higher humidity area so that you don't end up with condensation at the cool end of the cage and again over moist bedding.

in keeping the humid hids on the cooler side. My ambient temps are always in the 70-75F range and I never have had issues with mold/fungus at all. I tend to squeeze the medium I use (sphagnum moss) as tightly as i can and re-moisten every week (as opposed to just misting) to keep the moss as fresh as possible. I also don't fill the hide to the maximum either but rather half way. I observe the hides to be used particularly after feeding and, of course, during ecydysis.

Those are interesting. I would have thought that the humidity would condense and then it would just be wet plastic against skin/scales. If they don't have any problems though...

My only advice would be that both of those hides let in significant amounts of light. If you bought some krylon black spray paint and put a few coats on that shoebox it would be even better. I guess its tough to get it dark without substrate though.

BobS Feb 18, 2010 10:48 AM

If you leave it over the cool side there is no condensation Just elevated humidity levels. I have used the Krylon and while it's supposed to be non-toxic there is significant odor for a good while. After I did it I have read many different articles about off gassing and casting doubt about me using it in a restrictive enclosure safely. (don't want to compound one problem with another) So I opted to stay clear. On a side note "Really Useful Boxes" now makes a black box that is recycled plastic that I will probably use in larger enclosures and they lock real well with the latches.

Here is the box. It's too high to fit in standard CB70 type boxes but is great for larger enclosures and comes in a few good sizes. It would be nice if somebody commercially sold black shoeboxes. I keep my eye out but nothing yet.
