I have been considering possibly thinking about looking at the potential of breeding my two Kingsnakes. Not for profit, just to have many babies to care for and watch grow. My female (thayeri X alternus) weighed in today at 209 grams, my male (thayeri) at 189. So, two questions:

1) What is the ideal minimum breeding size for a female Kingsnake? Is it largely based on length or mass?

2) How close in size do the male and female need to be in order minimize potential mate-eating?

Since this is strictly for fun/hobby I am willing to wait as long as it takes until conditions are ideal.

My opinion, You shouldn't breed them at all. Get yourself two pure Thayeri kings and try. Then you would be doing it right. Just a suggestion for a new breeder....Mike Bod

Size has nothing to with with it. When a female ovulates is when she is ready.

I have bred 20-21-23 and 24' Florida king at 9 months and 2 years of age. Get some size on the female is a hurry and they will produce.

My best clucthes with 100% viable eggs have been from small young females. older females or larger females, not so.

They double clutch as well.

whatever you decide to do, please honestly label your offspring and find good homes for them prior to hatching, you know, ask around who might want the animals. At least that way, you won't be stuck with animals that are hard to start feeding sometimes and animals that may not sell or find you can't give away. This is true whether you breed pure locality animals, subspecific crosses, or hybrids. Personally, I'd go with Mikes' suggestion, I agree with Rainers' evaluation, and also, like Mark, wanna see them 24" kings layin' those eggs!

Todd,

I think Mark meant 24 feet , not inches.

Thank you for the advice.

While I do appreciate the look of the pure species kingsnakes, I am honestly intrigued to see what this pairing would produce because the two individuals I have are very pretty. Having said that, any offspring will be properly labeled with heritage.

Honestly, many of the young will probably be kept by my husband and myself. I am not breeding them for the purpose of selling them, though we do have a couple of friends who may be interested in purchasing one should we choose to breed.

krfun, if you would like to purchase one of the young you are welcome to come visit when (if ever) they arrive. Also, the Nebraska Reptile Breeder's Expo is coming to Omaha in April. If you would like to email me off-list, I could recommend a breeder or two who have sold us top-quality captive bred reptiles. There are also several local breeders in the area, depending on what species you are interested in.
