Just use one of the many weight converters to change pounds to kg. Every kilo gram has 1000g, every gram has 1000 milligrams. Once you have the milligrams of your burm, divide by the grams per milliliter for each medication.

TO save a bit of math, just use the converter to go from pounds to milligrams.

Thank you. What I need to know is how many milligrams of medication to administer per kilogram of body weight. The bottles have recommended dosages on the back for dogs and cats, but they vary widely, and there is no mention of reptiles. Anyone have any guidance?

As I am not a reptile vet, I have no clue what are the recommended dosages are for reptiles. Since the one vet how knows snakes but just refuses to handle Burmese pythons (which sounds utterly stupid to me, as a sedated Burmese Python isn't anymore difficult to handle than a sedated ball python. Only difference is the vet will need a few other guys to help move the animal.) There are also several large snake breeders in Florida, all who have vets who they see regularly. Post this in the Burmese python forum, more species specific advice is likely to come out there.

The OP needs to take his animal to a doctor. Without a culture and proper exam, you have no idea which, if any of those meds are indicated.

Unless you have a medical degree and have had a culture done, you have no idea WHAT you are up against and grabbing at straws at best.
Pony up the coin and get to a vet.
THEY know correct dosages.

Your "pony up the coin" comment has no merit. I have plenty of money to go to a vet and would gladly except that i live in st lucie county florida and the only "exotic" vets around dont want to mess with a 15 ft 100 lb burm. Balls, corns, kings no problem bring them in. So if you can guide me to a vet in my area that will look at her please let me know. Meanwhile she was a rescue that came to me with a hidden uri and i am just trying to get her better with what i have at my disposal.

mykee Feb 15, 2010 10:17 PM

Even better. You knowingly accepted an animal into your collection that you knew would not have access to veterinary care if need be?
Sad.

Ok, I am all for giving tough love to irresponsible owners, but what else did we expect the OP to do?

He has meds, he is willing to take the snake to a vet, and he even rescued the huge thing. Should he have left it to die wherever it was because there are no rep vets in the area he knows of?

Can no one here give him help? Sounds like they are willing to take the Burm to a vet if someone can recommend one in his area that will look at the snake.

I would help if I could, but I'm simply lucky enough to have a local vet that will take anything short of angry Cobras. If I didn't have that, I would be in this guy's position.

May I then suggest to the OP that he post this thread in the Burm forum where it would garner more educated species-specific advice.

Merck veterinary manual online. I'd post the link on the list but it would get deleted. I Might be able to copy and paste some of the recommendations.

Some meds are toxic to the Kidneys and or liver so make sure the animal is well hydrated!!!

If you are to try Baytril. There is a 100mg/ml dose available this may be more realistic for treating a very large animal.

OH 100lbs is about 45.3kg (2.2 lbs per kg)

Warm up the caging and increase the humidity. you want the whole cage around 85 without hot spot max of 95. Higher humidity will help to loosen secretions.

Please also consider environmental contaminants or conditions that could cause URI symptoms. Formaldehyde(in new plywood), Ammonia, very dusty bedding, very low humidity or HIGH humidity in cold conditions. These could be a causitive factor in the developing the URI and potentially mimic one in some cases.

You really should go to a vet!! Especially in dosing such a very large animal. UNLESS you are like me and the closest competent vet is 170miles away.

I take no liability in the care of your animal.

Hey looked at the dosing suggestions there are no recommendations in the Merck manual for any of those meds for use in reptiles. BACK TO THE VET!!!!!

GENT is extremely toxic to the kidneys!!!

Lincomycin is for treating cattle

clindamycin is a good ATB but not listed for treatment of infections in reptiles. Not necessarily that effective for URIs but generally effective in treating blood infections as I recall again not listed for reptiles.

The "floxacins or flouroquinolones" are great for URI due to the efficacy in gram - bacteria and their excretion into mucus membranes.

Hi, read that you had problems with your Vet. Thought this might help, at least a little =)

http://www.reptilechannel.com/reptile-health/vet-listing.aspx

It's a list of some Vet's that work with Reptiles. Maybe you can find one???

Good luck!
