volcanic rock?

princessmantisus Sep 20, 2003 11:14 AM

Would it be ok to use pumice as a drainage layer? Its lighter than gravel and porous... They sell bags of it for cheap where I live. Also, I bought two really neat bromeliads that are planted in some volcanic rock. The rock planter came from crater lake in Oregon. Its never been exposed to pesticides or anything like that... Would the plants inside die because the volcanic rock stays moist and that touches their roots? Or could this hurt the frogs? Thanks a bunch!!!!!

I think the rock is too coarse for the frogs belly's.

Pumice makes a great drainage layer, especially mixed with a little charcoal. Bryan is right. Most of the volcanic rock is rather coarse and sharp for decoration, however. I use some of the smoother rope forms a lot, but live near a vast volcanic area with lots of choice. If you can get some that isn't sharp, it works just fine.
