The male in the first picture is very curious looking. Does not look like a Lake Okeechobee king, which is where 99% of wild caught kings in the pet trade come from. Do you have any further info as far as locality?

I caught him myself two years ago under a board along with the female in the picture below. It's interesting to me how he varies from the others around that region. I have another that is in cooling that is also a male that looks a lot like him. They seem to have narrower heads and more flecking than the traditional find. All were found south of the big Florida lake.

Now that I think of it, I found a female just like that (maybe slightly darker) just outside Pahokee. It seems like that color/pattern phase occasionally shows up around there. It actually reminds me of the kings from around Tampa.

Like this Female:

That's a sweet one! The only two that I found like that were males and it seems like out of the ones that I found, as well as others that I have gotten some WCs from, the females were the darker ones and the males the more narrow-headed and lighter ones. Do you still have that female?

foxturtle Feb 15, 2010 07:39 PM

Yep I still have her. I just took the picture a few minutes ago.

I have another male, and 2 other females from the same spot ready to breed this year, so I should be producing a bunch from that line.

They are pretty yellow by comparison to most normal Florida kings:

They are awesome! They look like two het hybinos that I have, almost like a sulfur, post pics of the babies when you get some!

foxturtle Feb 15, 2010 08:13 PM

Its not surprising they somewhat resemble sulfurs. They were collected in the same spots.

It'll be a while, but I'll definitely post pics come hatching season!

I love the second pair (the darker ones), and that hypo from Kevin.

Good luck.

Thanks! That dark pair had these babies last year, I was really happy with them: (some are in shed)

And some new OBX from Charles Shanklin
