Freak heating incidents - retorical post

BillMcgElaphe Feb 15, 2010 05:29 PM

I look at the FORUMs as places for casual discussion where folks can share observations, opinions, and general thoughts.
.
Below is just a casual observation that and draws no conclusions, but I found it interesting when many of us are examining the optimum brumation temps.
.
I lost electric in a snow storm before Christmas and the brumation temps of my NA Rat Snakes (and a few miscellaneous others) dropped to 38F (3.3 C) for 24 hours.
.
To add insult to injury, temps dropped to 33F (1/2 C) for one day because of a heat controller failure last week.
.
Result:
All animals (the full spectrum of North America), including subtropical Deckert’s Rat variant, western Rats like Baird's and SUBOCs, are fine, warmed, responsive, and feeding.
Just for what its worth....

Hey Bill, I used to freak when my brumation temps dropped below what I considered optimal. Last year I relaxed a bit and let them get pretty low, down to mid 30s for sure for fairly extended periods of time. I figured as long as it didn't freeze, I would be OK. All brumated snakes did great, and I had great fertility last year. 73 eggs from four female corns. All but one or two hatched. I think letting the temps drop below 40-50 is not a bad thing.

Good stuff, Kevin
It's understandable with temparate animals, I just wasn't brave enough to try such low temps, even just for a day, on subtropicals; at least on purpose!!!

I never tried brumating subtropicals before like deckerts, yellows or glades from far southern florida, but I do have a pair of transpecos I am raising up. I am leary brumating them here in Louisiana due to the humid winters and my brumation room isnt well insulated. I do keep the temps artifically cool using an AC unit. Its not unusual to get temps in the mid-70s in October and even November, and in the 60s in December. I may opt to give them a warm spot to rest their heads and upper part of their bodies on if need be. The dang corns are so bullet proof LOL!!

I try and keep temperatures in the snake room from getting below 40. As long as they're above freezing I expect the snakes to be fine, I just like to have a little wiggle room with temperatures.
