Breeding question?

noahsark31 Feb 15, 2010 08:07 PM

Hey all, I dont post here much but Im on KS all the time. I have a few Hondos to breed this year and I was wondering what you would breed to what. Here is what I have.
Males:Tangerine Hypo, Anery het. hypo, Tricolor het hypo poss het albino.
Females: 2 Tangerine hypos, 1 Dark melanistic looking tangerine, 1 wide banded tangerine, 2 tangerine het hypos (one is a vanishing pattern)
Its all up in the air right now. They have been cooled and are eating good. Waiting for their first shed then its on. I also have a pair of Striped poss het albino sinaloans with an albino nelsons female, 1 pr of snow corns, and het albino BPs. Should be my best year yet. I have 2 more sinaloans and albino hondos but they are still too young to breed. Next yr will be neat with a patternless snow southern pine snake project thrown in. Thanks for your time.

Personally I would breed the Hypos to Hypos. I wouldn't breed the het to possible hets, or to something het for another trait. The Honduran market is flooded and the het to possible het route will give you wild type looking snakes which you will be hard pressed to get rid of.

While I do not breed my snakes to try and make a profit, keeping a lot of babies around and feeding them is a lot of work and time consuming.

You also said you have a pair of sinaloans, and a single female nelsons. Are you planning to cross them?

They are already crossed. He said the "Sinaloan" pair was "poss. het albino".

I'd tend to agree... hypo to hypo pairings will give you a predictable outcome, and likely won't leave you with a bunch of hatchlings that you can't sell. Having said that, though, hypo x dark tangerine would be an interesting pairing, since at the F2 generation, you could end up with a hypomelanistic melanistic hondo, paradoxically. There's been some speculation as to what such a beast might look like, but I don't think anyone's actually tried it.

but first a question...what do you want to produce? If you have something that you are working towards, then go that route.

Otherwise, here is some suggestions based on the information given.

Males:Tangerine Hypo, Anery het. hypo, Tricolor het hypo poss het albino.

Females: 2 Tangerine hypos, 1 Dark melanistic looking tangerine, 1 wide banded tangerine, 2 tangerine het hypos (one is a vanishing pattern)

Male to Female Pairings

1) Tang Hypo to Tang Hypo

1a) Tang Hypo to Tang Het Hypo Vanishing

2) Anery Het. Hypo to Tang. Hypo

2a) Anery Het. Hypo to Tang Het Hypo

3a) Anery Het Hypo to Wide Tang.

3) Tri-color het Hypo poss het Amel to dark melanistic tang.

These pairing will give you a mix of possible outcomes...and who knows you may prove out that some of your normal females are het for something else.

Good luck!

-Rusty
