Hmmm...breeding "season", or year round?

amazondoc Feb 16, 2010 01:55 AM

Hey guys--

I'm still ogling baby brbs on various web sites. I've noticed that there are birthdates ranging from at least May to November. Is there no real breeding season for brbs? Do y'all just breed all year, or what??

Yeah, I have noticed the varying dates as well. There are 2 or 3 people that I know of that have babies right around May, but the rest that I have talked to all seem to have them in the late summer or fall. Not sure what the other guys are doing differently to get early litters? I sure would like to spread out my baby season like Dave can do with his BCI and BRBs!

A lot has to do with climate. Real or artificial. BRB's do seem to require a cooling period prior to breeding. Most of us work that around the cooler winter months. Some, those with central AC, can maintain cooler temps during the warmer summer months and those BRB's can start their breeding cycle sooner in the year.

I for one do NOT have AC so rely on the cooler winter months for my cooling period.

Amazondoc,
My experience is they are non-seasonal breeders. They get stimulated by temperatures north of where they evolved and make for easy cycling here. My group seems to get triggered by wider daily temperature fluctuations which usually happens here in the fall (they get real squirmy in October). I've had one litter in June, two in May and one in December. I also had a slug out in May.
This year I have two females gravid and due in mid-April.
Fingers crossed!
Paul

That's quite a range in dates. Thanks for the interesting info!
