Feeding: when to move up to Hoppers?

Tigercat Feb 16, 2010 12:42 PM

Hello,

My Corn Caedan gets two fuzzies once a week. Even a few hours after feeding him I can't tell that he has been fed. He is about 2 1/2ft long and about a year old. I was wondering if it would be OK to move him up to hoppers.

Also someone tell me that I just have an oddball snake LOL. Even if it is right before he is going to shed he will eat. I mean his last shed, which was by far his best shed, he ate that morning and then shed that night. Is he just the odd one out or is he trying to tell me something?

Nice corn. Is he a ghost? I would say at 2.5 feet he is definitely large enough for hoppers, and maybe even weanlings!! I have two yearling corns that are about that size and are taking weanlings. If two fuzzys arent making a bulge, definitely hoppers. Also, many corns are very reliable feeders and will even feed when in shed. Some do, some dont. But its not unusual. Very nice corn indeed.

Yes he is a ghost corn. Though the pet store I got him from had him labeled as a amelanistic/albino. They obviously don't know there snakes. Anyway thanks for the tip. I am going to see if I can trade some fuzzies for hoppers from my teacher. We raise a bunch of feeder mice for the classroom animals. I will definitely be moving him up to hoppers and will have to find some place where I can get hoppers for a decent price.

Try Petco or Petsmart. They do sell various sizes of frozen mice and rats. He will probably take a defrosted rodent as well as a live, and they are easier to keep!!

He can eat small adult mice. The thickness of the food item should be about the same as the thickness of the widest part of the snake.

Gorgeous snake!

I have an amel that eats anytime. If she's so blue she can't see, she just opens her mouth for me to place the mouse in it. She's a hoot!

Ha! That's hilarious!

Yeah, she's had about 15 years to learn about eating, and she's quite chubby. Wish I could get that on video..

Well he got his first hopper and he will definitely be going to hoppers. Took it pretty easily and is now just lounging about in his tank digesting his big meal.
