I watched the committee meeting today. They are televised. The bill passed the Environmental Committee with no problems. Sen. Sokols bill would ban all the reptiles of concern. If you have one, you can keep it 'til it dies. This is just a first step. There are many more committees to go. Crossing my fingers.

It sucks for the herp community in general, but IMO Florida probably has a legitimate problem with burmese pythons. I hope discretion and common sense are used with the banning of other non-related species and everything doesnt get lumped into one big ball. Like they say, dont hate the player, hate the game. Its unfortunate Floridas trials and tribulations with invasive python species has gotten so out of control. I know some of it is media hype, but you gotta admit the situation in Florida is just too easy for the media to pick apart.

Like i said...

One inch at a time. That's how they will get our snakes.

So many pople on here frown at the gun rights issue i posted as a comparison.

But it is not about "rights" with snakes. But it is about our FREEDOM. And once it is taken away the gov't wants more.

Some day soon you will all see what I mean. I have been on this planet for 50 years and you won't beleive the changes i have seen in just a short time. Damn baby boomers!

Adding regulation is always easy. Deregulation is almost impossible.

i have been saying this all along.

For all the naysayers and democratics..So i hate to say i told ya so. But your mindset stinks. You know who you all are.

Too add insult to this "pre ban". last week the nice gov't workers who have been putting tracking devices in the pythons to see what they can do. Well the freeze killed most of them. thats right, the pythons in florida were found dead.

that means these things cannot survive in the wild up in northern states like ..Georgia. But Georgia is following suit. So no pythons for us Georgians either.

Seems to me that the U.S. always follows what laws Califonia and Florida instill. Hmmmm.

here is a little humor for the democratic mindset...

Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Southerner?

Here is a little test that will help you decide.

The answer can be found by posing the following question:

You're walking down a
deserted street with your wife
and two small children.

Suddenly, an Islamic
Terrorist with a huge knife
comes around the corner,
locks eyes with you,
screams obscenities, praises
Allah, raises the knife, and charges at you...

You are carrying a
Kimber 1911 cal. 45 ACP, and you are an expert shot.
You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do?

.................................................. ................

Democrat's Answer :

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor or oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to him
that would inspire him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think?
What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?
What does the law say about this situation?
Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind
of message does this send to society and to my children?
Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?
Should I call 9-1-1?
Why is this street so deserted?
We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day to make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior..
This is all so confusing!
I need to debate this with some friends for few days and try to come to a consensus.

it's a goofy show to begin with but what a particularly bad peice of misinformation and sensationalisim. They even tried to suggest that "experts" are worried that The loose Pythons in Florida might "hybridize with venomous" creating Monsters in the Everglades.

The sad part is that many that see that show will buy it hook, line AND sinker.

Frustrating and depressing.

Zach_MexMilk Feb 17, 2010 12:13 AM

funny that you mentioned the monsterquest episode. the person they actually had talking about the possibility of hybridization between boids and "venomous" said it wasn't possible. the editing made it seem that it could haha...
remember when they searched for big snakes in nyc? bizarre

ps: i actually really like that show. as lame as it is, its pretty fun

I am stone cold southerner, but two clips may be overkill. And what's wrong with a mounted islamic radical?Outstanding hatch-out by the way!

What bothers me is the fact it has gotten to this state of being. You cant sensationlize or make illegal that which doesnt exist. If no one was finding wild burmese crusising the hoods of Florida, there would be no issue. The sad fact is it has happened with enough regularity to cause these studies and investigations to be conducted. It has occurred with enough regularity to give the media something to bite into and the government to get involved. The bottom line IMO is that somewhere, somehow, the herp community F...ed up with these species of python. How, when, where? I dont know and apparently no one is saying. As far as banning and making illegal, its like my Daddy used to say, "Locks are for honest people". Just look at the number of hots being kept illegally and without permit by "experienced and knowledgable" herpers. You know who I am referring to. The herpers with tons of experience that always manage to keep that one rattlesnake or copperhead without a permit in the collection. If pot growers can keep fields of pot hidden and available for sale, you dont think there are some innovative herpers out there who wont keep breeding pairs of burmese and illegally transport across state lines to friendly states? Thats like saying no one in Georgia keeps or breeds cornsnakes!!
