Why I love my girlfriend...reason #47

severa May 25, 2003 05:54 PM

Because she catches snakes that are longer than her!

She caught this beautiful black rat that was about 6 feet long. It has been some time since I have seen one this long. We used to catch them when I was a kid around my neighbors chicken coops and many of them were over 6 feet. This was our first snake catch this year. In a couple of weeks we are going to Lake Burton (North Georgia) and spend some nights catching Eastern Water Snakes and "Observing" copperheads along the banks. Lake Burton has a huge population of water snakes. Last year we caught 7 water snakes in less than a 50 yard section. And to our surprise, we witnessed a 3 foot water snake trying to swallow a rotting bream (pan fish). I swear I never would have thought that a wild snake would resort to eating carrion. We have a blast doing it as long as we avoid getting musked on. They are very fiesty and have got a plentiful amount of that musk to make someone miserable, yet its not enough for us to stop catching them.
This year we hope to see a rattlesnake. All the years I have spent hiking/camping in the North Ga mountains and I have never seen one.The locals claim to see them all the time. I have even explored rocky areas where I would have thought of them to thrive but yet have I to see one. Enough babbling...I just wanted to spread joy with our this years first wild catch.

She's never really been afraid of snakes, but didn't really like them, either. Sorry it's not a rat snake, but my mandarins are still acclimating.

I have been a herper since I was about five, I met her 3 years ago and she was as much of a fanatic as I am. Her pride and joy is her ball python Tigger, who is fifteen. Yeah, I thought to myself, I think I'll keep her. But I have to watch out for her because everything I teach her she gets good at. I taught her to trout fish, and she out fishes me, I teach her the basics in keeping marine tanks, her tank was nearly flawless, I'll be damned if I am going to teach her to deep sea fish...but she's a keeper. By the way, nice ball python. One day I will have a piebald! The pic below was a piebald at the Atlanta herp show last December. They are a bit pricey still, but I eagerly anticipate the day when either I am financially stable, or more likely affordable.

And she's a beautiful gal to boot! My girlfriend was TERRIFIED of snakes when we met. I broke her in with a Sinolaon milksnake, the first serpent she'd ever held. Now look.
