Caulker Cay x Hog Island

zeus1228 Feb 18, 2010 11:32 AM

I'm just wondering if any one has tried it or seen anything like it? I'm just wondering what the result would be like.

Thanks,
Stephen

99.9% of experienced boa hobbyists/breeders frown on such breedings! Thus the reason you have not seen them done. The only time I'm in favor of crossing two different localities is when a mutation is trying to be enhanced. For example 50/50 Bcc albinos... Blood red tails and the sleek Suriname head on a albino...

I always like to have a purpose for doing putting a pair together.

What look would you hope to accomplish by this breeding?

It would be a shame to dilute either of these insular boas... Not to mention you probably couldnt give them away

My guess is you're wanting to see if you can combine the natural hypomelanism from the Hog Island and the natural Anerytherism from the Cay Caulker and produce insular ghosts, right? Just a tip, in my experience, the Cay Caulkers are not TRULY anerytheristic. Mine had some red in them, one more than the other. So if that's your goal, I'd abandon it now.

Like others have stated, this would probably not be an overly popular project with the majority of the industry and hobby. You would probably have to give the boas away or wholesale them to a petstore for $20 each, and then who knows will end up with the babies and how they'll be treated for the rest of their life...

In my opinion, all breeding projects should be VERY well thought out. I applaud you for doing some research into whether this project would be viable or not.

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously

Thanks for the input. I never actually planned on breeeding the two, i was just wondering what other people thought about cross breeding, especially for the reason you suggested. I only have a caulker cay right now and i wouldn't ever dream of diluting her bloodlines.

Thanks
