Are you going to feed me NOW?!

pyromaniac Feb 19, 2010 07:21 PM

Alfonzo and Zoey a couple weeks ago. They are about 32 inches long now.

Their new cage. 2 x 2 x 4 feet. The yellow rope is so I can pick this thing up and put it out on the porch during sunny days. The sheet is to keep it covered while in the house to keep the cats from seeing the snakes or the snakes from seeing the cats, and to prevent drafts. They have a full spectrum lamp overhead covered by an aluminum cake pan as a reflector and an UTH at the warm end under the cardboard hide. They spent some time in this last summer but then wintered in a 105 quart Sterilite tub. Recently I noticed that Alfonzo was longer than that tub, hence moving day. They seem quite happy with their new digs, burrowing around in the deep aspen and in general having plenty of room to stretch out in.

Today Alfonzo let me know in no uncertain terms he was hungry; he followed me around as I walked past their cage, like Are you going to feed me NOW?! Are you going to feed me NOW?! Are you going to feed me NOW?! Needless to say,I fed them! LOL!

Different approach and very interesting. I like that it doubles as an outdoor "solarium" which won't overheat in mild temps like glass would. Neat snakes too. Love it when they interact and I suspect it's fairly common in situations which encourage it.

I let a lot of my snakes cruise free in a secure room and they become remarkably tame and trusting.

I wish I could let my snakes roam loose in my cabin but my cats would think I had given them new animated string toys! Also have another person in the vicinity who has not mastered the skill of properly shutting doors. If I could let the snakes be out of their cages I think Alfonzo could actually crawl up in my lap! I do have plans to convert a screen gazebo into an outdoor summer habitat. Then I could sit in it with my snakes.

How much does Alfonzo weigh now? My male holdback is at 329g's empty as of today. Rich

Alfonzo weighs 296 grams now and Zoey is heavier (about the same length but stouter), but since I fed them yesterday I will weigh them again in a couple days when I can handle them more. Because they spent some time in brumation they just stayed the same weight for several weeks. They are making up for that period of fasting big time now.
329 grams is a BIG boy! Post a pic of him?

BigHairy8s Feb 21, 2010 02:02 PM

Here he is! Mr. Attitude himself. Pics are as of yesterday. The squares on the bed are 12" exactly so you get a rough idea for length. He was incooperative to say the least but sat still long enough to weigh him. Pics are crap. Don't show the red on him at all. He is to be bred with a high red Stillwater hypo in 2011.

Very attractive and robust looking bull! For photos, try a neutral background or substrate and when the snake is somewhat chilled. Some of that black sand that Jason Nelson uses for his GB pics would accentuate the colors on your bull in a dramatic way. Just a thought...

One of my Pacifics who really didnt want to be in the lightbox! LOL! Having them on the cool side is a good idea. I will try the black sand thing, too.

Your light box is a novel idea and produces a stunning effect. What a beaut of a Pacific too. Nice yellows and some orange too. Very inspiring...

Them today sleeping off their meal of a couple days ago. Zoey weighs 270 grams. I thought she was bigger than her brother but she's not. She's thicker but not as long. They are very tolerant of me doing silly things with them like photo shoots and weigh-ins. In a few days I will take pictures of them in the lightbox.

They come out really pretty in the lightbox.

Your Mr. Attitude is looking good. I think mine will catch up in size this season as they are eating very enthusiastically now.

That pic of your Pacific is awesome! The light box technique brings out the color pretty well. Of course as a Gopher lover I'm quite biased.
