hot glue (glue gun) and pythons

rdm01 Feb 19, 2010 07:21 PM

Hi

Just curious if its ok to fix an enclosure and hide box with hot glue from a glue gun (cooled and dried of course

The glue doesnt have an odour when dry and is exactly like plastic. There is no toxic sign or warning on the label and there is no info on the net about it being toxic either.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks everyone!

aquarium silicone at home depot should be fine once its cured. especially since its meant to work with moisture/water and animals. Just an idea. I'd double check specifics

I do know one or two breeders who use hot glue to glue water dishes in place in the tub and they've never had any problems. As you said glue must dry completely and enclosure must air out.

Hot-melt glue is pretty much inert, once it cools. I would use it without worrying a bit. But, it's not the strongest adhesive around. I sure wouldn't build a whole snake cage with it. But for little repairs to to stick something lightweight in place, it would be a good choice.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm definately going to try it out as it will save me a lot of moolah and headaches.

I've been using it to glue plastic together and so far the bond (on high heat) is extremely strong. Its not coming off any time soon.

I'll let you all know how my snake fares with in his cage and maybe its something that could be useful for us all.

Thanks again!

I have been using hot glue in my snakes cages for years. I make water bowls by taking a plastic butter tub and hot gluing the lid to the bottom as a stabilizer. Is quick, easy, and cheep way to make bowls that are replaceable. Never had any complaints from the snakes. Also never had a bowl tip over. I put the bowl directly on bottom of cage and put bedding around it.
