Sav loosing his claws

monitor_dude Sep 20, 2003 03:44 PM

I have a 7-month old Savana Monitor that keeps ripping his claws out. He's also ripped off the "pinkie" toe on his front-right claw. I've heard that the claws will grow back but I'm not sure how he's ripping them out in the first place. He doesn't have anything in his tank that he could really get a grip on like that. Any ideas, comments, or suggestions?

Im not really sure why hes doing that.My guess is that its to hot in his cage and he doesnt have a place to go cool off.He could be trying to claw his way out.I would check the temps again just to be sure.Hope this helps.peace

i'v had 2 problems like that before but not w/a monitor. the first was my iguana, he ripped ALL of his claws out but 2, he did this on wood (it was a screen cage, the hood holding the screen together and his drift wood would catch his claws and he ripped them out) he ripped them all out n about 2 days. my other was a uromastyx, there was only 1 claw missing and i was taking her to the vet for a check up and the vet noticed 2 other claws missing, said this was because she wasn't sheding right. the skin around her toes wasn't coming off and it was constricting the toe and the claw came out.
