Easterns and rodents

sschind Feb 21, 2010 04:49 AM

About 15 years ago I was given a baby WC eastern hog and I was lucky enough to get him feeding on rodents. I had him for about 6 years before he passed on. I do not know why he died. I didn't have a necropsy done.

My questions pertain to the feeding of rodents exclusively to Eastern and southern hogs. I know from experience that westerns are fairly easy to get feeding on rodents and it appears that a rodent diet has no detrimental effect on this species. However, I have heard some people claim that feeding a diet of rodents to an eastern or a southern is bad for them and that snakes fed exclusively on rodents do not live as long.

I am looking for your experiences. I would like to get another eastern to use for my school educational programs but I do not want to do toads. I could, but I don't want to. I also don't want to get a snake if a rodent diet is not good for them. I wouldn't be opposed to an occasional FT toad now and then for variety if it were deemed necessary.

Thanks in advance.

I have heard the same thing about feeding easterns/southerns rodents. I was told that it had to do with the rodent fur, and if you feed them hairless mice/rats then they would do ok.

Not sure if I buy that story, but I have heard it a lot from people who have kept them.
