My future in boa breeding-any advice?

bytheshore1 Feb 21, 2010 12:50 PM

I have kept boas for many years now and the boa species has always been one of my favorites. Last year I produced some of the nicest Sunsets that I have see-even if I am saying so myself. I have several other different boa projects going including Genetic Stripe, Different Sunsets, Hog islands, Dumerils, and 2 of the most purple Surinams anybody has seen. My question is what will be affected by the proposed law changes and how long before it will be enacted? Will all boas constrictors be listed? This list could be very long. Or is it, at this time, boa constrictor constrictor only? Too many to list but major species or subspecies as well? I know until it is posted that we might not know all but your thoughts on this and how it will affect us as small breeders go would be interesting and hopefully help. Thanks and please lets keep up the fight!

As it's currently written, it's all boas with the species name "constrictor". So, every animal you listed except the Dumerils.

It would cover BCC, BCI, BCO, BCA, etc.. Because they're all Boa CONSTRICTOR __________.

Basically, anything posted on this forum would be covered.

That really bites. What is gonna happen to all my snakes? I might even have prego females now. I know that there are many people that this will affect. I continue to voice and send letters. I saw a table at a show with burmese babies that nobody hardly even stopped at because he had to have a notice stating he couldnt sell them without a ROC permit. I felt really down. Dont take these beatiful snakes away from us.

The Affect it will have on you & your Boas is that you will not be able
to transport or sell them across state lines.

That's if its listed in its present form, you'll keep your Boas but
our hobby / industry will be seriously disabled and weakened

Heck, I am in florida. How is this gonna help the Glades? All the boa/python breeders in florida having to keep them in. Plus the state will probably require permits on them as they do the burmese now. Now that will kill any interest in the reptiles on this list. Burmese sales have gone down thru the cellar. These guys in charge dont make any sense.

You think it's bad in Florida now, check out SB 318 (a State of Florida bill):

Prohibits any person from possessing, importing, selling, trading, or breeding certain specified reptile species, including a reptile designated as a reptile of concern by the FWC; provides certain exceptions applicable to reptiles for which owner holds permit issued before specified date.

This will make any animal listed as an ROC illegal to own, import, sell, trade, or breed!

Bills like this are why it's SO important for us all to stay involved so we can fight this nonsense!

Man JB.... I didnt know that SB318 was that stringent....Geez... I didnt think they were pushing for something that would criminalize ownership too...... This legislation is just exhausting....!!

I fear that the "Herp Biz" will be an unrecognizable shell of its former self if this happens. It won’t be the same for any of us. My heart hurts for the big python people…and really we’re just a hair behind them.

I was only speaking about federal Laws (S373 / HR 2811), the FL State Law SB 318
(a State of Florida bill): is a serious problem
for snake/Boa owners in FL state.

This FL Law SB 318 needs to be stopped , its horrible

Sounds like if we don't stop them they will not stop until they destroy what we all love completely.

me, too!
Like bytheshore, I also live in FL. NOT GOOD!
All of these laws must be defeated.
We're living with the ROC permitting and chipping for pythons simply because they're already here and, therefore, we have to, but no more ground should be given up-not even on burms and retics!
Let's please try to make sure that we don't sell the big python guys up the river to save our own skins. I have to admit that, in the beginning, I would have been more open to "compromise," but as things have progressed, I see that "compromise" is just an open door for much worse.
Good luck everyone-and I wish that I only had to mean "good luck" in breeding!

Yeah the new proposed legislation is overkill.... But I do think the current system of chipping and required permits is the way to go... the only problem is they never fully commited to enforcing it properly... they didnt even give it a chance to work..
I honestly would be alright with having to chip all of my snakes as well as ones I produce..and keep accurate records of sales and transfers(although this would suck during tax time..LOL). if that's what would be required to come to some middle ground......
