I have always wondered what thermostats everyone prefers. I know proportional is the bests but which one:
Ranco

I have been doing some reading and I thought I knew what I wanted. But now I see the Johnson and Ranco are on/off thermostats a a lot of people use those and then there are the proportional thermostats, Helix and Herpstat. I was wondering which is better, proportional or on/off?

Proportional is my preference....any of the spyder robotics (herpstat) will work and with pretty tight tolerances.

I have to agree with Joel. Any of the Spyder robotics thermostats are excellent products. I have a number of the "normal" versions (the ones that do not come with a night drop probe) as well as a few Herpstat ND.

I don't prefer one over the other, but the additional money I spent on the ND has made it a little easier at breeding time.

When I was researching thermostats a long time ago, I remember reading that the Herpstats have the best "track record" as far as failure goes. Essentially, I read in more than one place from a number of different people/reviews that the Herpstats had practically ZERO instances of failure. I'm not completely sure of how much truth there is in that statement, but I have had absolutely no issues with any of the Herpstats I've purchased.

I have about a dozen of them in use right now and won't use any other brand of thermostat. For the number of features that come with them they are the best value for the money.

The only question you really need to ask is which features do you really need or want in a thermostat. Herpstat/Spyder Robotics offers practically all of the things you would need in various models.

I'm still not sure if it's weird that my best friend is a two year old boa named Ronin. He's quiet, non-judgemental and listens... what more could you want?

I got my first Herpstat ND about a year and a half ago, and I have since switched all my enclosures from on/off to Herpstats. I couldn't be happier with their performance, and ease of use. My electric bill has gone down quite a bit, and the enclosures hold humididity much better. If your gonna spend the money, definatly go with a proportional. The herpstats don't cost a whole lot more than the Johnsons/Ranco on/off thermostats, and their performance is far superior, in my opinion.
