fish for nile?

po Feb 23, 2010 12:55 PM

hey, was just reading on a link from below about not feeding savs to much fish with Thiaminase, my sav rarely gets fish, but i do fed them to my nile a bit more, (seems like good enrichment for her to have to "hunt" vs her other food) just wondering what y'all think about type/frequency of fish for a nile (though I'm almost afraid to ask cuz I know how it gets on here sometimes!) the rest of her diet is whole rodents, roaches and meatballs of the SZD.
thanks for any ideas, we get better @ keeping our animals by sharing ideas with each other!

Stay away from the meatballs. There is no need to offer the SDZ meatball diet even if it's sparingly. It is a perfect example of taking shortcuts in regards to diet.

Stick with whole prey.

Since you already offer rodents and roaches (Great), I'd recommend you include Birds (whole), crustaceans (whole, not only the meat), and whole chopped up fish.

What kind of fish? I stick with tilapia and rainbow trout OR salmon every here and there sparingly and as a small part of your Niles overall diet

. Below is a link to a website containing a list of fish WITH thiaminase and WITHOUT thiaminase. Have a look.

I fed my adult Savannah some shellfish and White Bass sparingly for a couple weeks and he got all backed up and constipated for two weeks. Needless to say I Haven't bothered offering them since.

Hope that helps.
