youngster feeding question --

amazondoc Feb 26, 2010 02:41 AM

Hey guys, how about a little expert advice --

My Peruvian is a VERY willing eater. She is always very hungry....and although I feed roughly every 5 days, she seems hungry a day or two before feeding time.

She's about 6 months old -- born in August. She normally eats fuzzy mice. I offered her a small furry once, which she refused.

At the last feeding, I gave her TWO fuzzies -- which she happily scarfed down.

So, finally my question: do ya think two fuzzies every 5 days will be too much for her? Or perhaps alternate between 2 fuzzies and 1? Or a fuzzy plus a pinky? Or try the furries again? Or sticke with the tried and true? I've got frozen mice in all sizes, so I can try anything y'all think would be preferable.

Thanks for any input!

I don't have PRB's but from what I understand they are almost identical to BRB's. If that is correct, you are feeding way to small of prey. Baby BRB's can and will take hopper mice from birth. That's what I feed all my babies every week and they do just fine.

Well, that would explain why she's hungry.

I'll try her on a small furry again next time.

Dunno. Yes, I'm a bad person, I haven't weighed her. I do have a gram scale, though. I'll try to stick her on it in the next day or two.

You bad bad person you...

My baby BRB's are typically around 30 grams at birth and I feed them smaller hopper mice. By now most babies are 2X or 3X that weight and getting larger hopper mice, maybe even called weanling mice. I raise most of my own so not 100% clear on where the transition from hopper to weanling is. I can say most if not all the hoppers I pull for feeding now would likely survive on their own if they were pulled and put in a cage on their own.

Well, I fed her a hopper/small furry on the night of 2/27, and she ate it happily. Unfortunately, I found today that she had regurged it. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I'm gonna rearrange the box a bit to be sure she has good hiding options in both the cool and warm end. Right now, she has one largish (for her size) hide that straddles the heated and non-heated portions. The hot side is at 78-80. I'll also raise that a couple degrees, since she has plenty of room on the cool side if she gets too warm.

Then I'll skip her next scheduled feed (which would be about Friday), and go back to fuzzies on the feed after that. Cross your fingers for us!

Well that sucks, sounds like you have all the right plans in place, did you ever get a weight on her?

Some just don't do well with larger (normal) sized meals.

No, I got distracted and let it slip. I'll try again tomorrow!
