ceramic heat emitters

lele Sep 20, 2003 07:09 PM

I have heard mixed things about these. I am going to need something for my anoles when I use my a/c and then in winter at night if temps drop too much (I live in a very old farm house - rather drafty) I am wondering what to get. I know it refers to anoles, but, well....it's me! So I figured I could ask!

Lele-

I have used one on and off as needed in the past. They produce allot of heat, with no visible light, and will last for years. They are expensive but if you need night heat, they would be a good choice. The brand of choice with these bulbs is Pearlco and the 60w is the lowest wattage they make. Hope this helps!

how do you find these compared to a nocturnal bulb (red or black)?

I am not sure if anoles can see red light like chameleons can. I would not use a red bulb on chameleons, but I don't think the anoles eyes are as sophisticated as chameleons eyes are. Hope this helps!

Don't worry about providing night heat unless your house gets below 60F. The absolute lowest temp is 55F before you need to provide supplemental heat. Hope this helps!

If you find it gets chilly from drafts more so than from the whole room temp dropping, you can always put a sheet around your chams cage at night in the winter. I did this last year, and kept a thermometer inside that records the min/max temp and humidity. It worked wonderfully, and helped keep the humidity up at night. It gets dry in here during the winter b/c of all the fake heat.

where do you find a thermeter that records highs and lows?

Wal-Mart sells a wireless digital temp/humidity gauge for $40. I use one and it is awesome. Everyone should have one of these. Hope this helps!

I got mine at radio shack. It was $30 CDN I think. it's about the size of a small note pad (maybe 4"x3". I just set it in there in different spots. The wireless one's look neat. I'm going to get one for when my eggs are incubating... They are very useful... especially when you're trying something new, and can't check the temp every five min.
