Gary93 Feb 26, 2010 08:56 PM

whats the best to use? Buddy my cuban is about 6 months old and i keep him on non adhesive shelf liner right now. im going to be builing him a bigger cage very soon and was probably going to use ceramic tiles in there. are there better options to use than tile?

Gary, The best substrate is what closest matches their environment in the wild. For you, its what do you think is the easiest to clean. Tile will work, paper too. They will dig if given the opportunity. Can you , do you want to provide that? I use turf, The really dense high end stuff. I cant provide digging in my enclosure. Pick up is easy on turf but keeping it really clean is not. I dont like how hard surfaces bend their toes over, but thats just me. Stay away from the chips and shredded stuff.
BTW, too much fruit. If you want a big healthy animal, more high fiber greens. Fruit is seasonal for cyclura and they dont find much of it.

I use rabbit pellets as a substrate for neonates because if ingested accidentally is harmless and even nutricious. Of course my larger ones are outside and live much as their wild relatives do...

TRUE, but if you have LOTS of lizards you can NOT keep it clean enough long enough..Therein lies my problem...
