Female has not laid yet!

calirepguy Feb 27, 2010 02:06 PM

My second ever gravid ball python (1st one was a pied female that laid 5 weeks ago) had her pre-lay shed 35 days ago. My pied female laid at 30 days. When should I become concerned about a possible egg retention? She was 1800-1900 grams empty when I bred her so I don't think size is an issue. I have heard/read that 25-40 days is the usual time frame to lay after the pre-lay shed.

Thank you

Kevin

I wouldn't worry for at least another week or two. Is she seaking more humidity like submerging herself in her water bowl to try to get ready for her POS? Mine usually all soak before POS. I think it helps them go into a shed cycle since it hasn't been long since they had their preovulation shed. By the way how's the pied clutch looking?

Sorry I misread your thread.... I think..... did you mean post ovulation shed? It can take several weeks after ovulation to have their POS THEN about 30 after that you should have eggs. Chris

Sorry, I call the POS the pre-lay shed. My pied laid 30 days later and my DH snow is at 36 days.

I know it's stressful, but the snakes don't read the same books we do. I have a female who regularly goes 45 days before laying, and I know there are people on this forum who have had 50 day waits. You've got at least 2 or 3 weeks before you need to have any worries about egg binding.

I guess I'll get used to this. It is much more stressful than rosies, colubrids and other pythons and boas I have bred.

Maybe the first time thing is always the same.
