dirt?

krystal_r Feb 27, 2010 07:15 PM

Hi
Im just curious if anyone on here is familliar with types of soil. The soil in the area i live is derived from a calcareous shale. I have alot of wildlife that dig burrows in the area and it seems to hold very well.

When it is dry it is dusty and hard as rock, after a rain it is very soft and squishy.

Do you think this will work well with monitors?

If you add water to it and it becomes slimy and squishy, i wouldn't recommend using it unless sand was mixed in with it. I used backyard dirt here from california and didn't like it.

The consistancy you want is like that of sand at the beach once you dig down a bit or when you've made connecting tunnels.

ok I was just curious, I see holes and tunnels all over out here where I live and was curious if all the creatures out here could build and live in tunnels with this dirt maybe so could my savs.

But ill just head to home depot today and get some top soil and sand. I checked with my landscapeing company I use to see if they carried decomposed granite- like Robyn at Proexotics uses but unfortunately they dont carry it.

Your landscaping companies should carry various types of fine sand and soil. I have plenty to choose from where I am at here in Cali. Sandy loam works, ask for that.

OKay thank you. I will check that out in the future, for right now im going to go ahead and just do the top soil and sand again.

Im out in colorado and its been really snowy lately so all of the soils and sands are wet and I would rather purchase from the outdoor companies in dryer weather anyway. Especially since we would purchase a ton or so, and i happen to live down dirt roads and would probably get stuck on the way home.

I just rebuilt my savs enclosure and i want to have it finished!

Sorry for the long posts.
