How to reduce SMELL

crusher70 Feb 27, 2010 08:31 PM

Beardies rock, but they can smell up a room. Now, I know that we are supposed to clean up their feces each day, but sometimes in real life this does not occur (shock!).

How can we cut back on beardie odor? We all know that their poop is rather pungent. Obviosly, daily clean-up is a must, but the smell drives the women in my life nuts. They love the beardies, but don't like a smelly bedroom. Are there air purifiers/machines that can cycle the air & eliminate or cut back the smell? Any ideas? Cricket bins tend to smell also.

C'mon guys, there's gotta be a way!

A buddy of mine with a sizable collection he had to keep in his house for awhile told me about the ionic air freshners they sell at places like Sharper Image. He said they work wonders and suggested I get one for my herp room that is inside my house to eliminate odors.

Cricket problem is easy. GET ROACHES.

I still gag when cleaning up dragon poop.

I recommend spreading it over a ritz cracker and firing it down the hatch.

It's a uniquely satisfying experience.

poop is always going to stink, nothing that can be done about it, other than cleaning it up as soon as possible. Improving ventilation in the room the dragons are in will help reduce the build up of odor, and air filters can help clean the air but in the end, cleaning the cage is still the most effective thing to do.

Avoid using any scented air fresheners around the cages though. These things may be harmful to dragons to inhale (they certainly are harmful to me to inhale...all those plug in oil things, potpourri etc. just burn through my sinuses like I am inhaling glass shards, not to mention if strong enough making my eyes water and my throat burn. Poop, though not pleasant to smell, just smells bad to me, doesn't have the burning watering sensation perfumy junk does (most often, it just ends up being a poop smelling and burning floral crappy perfume scent all blended together anyway...so I get the worst of both).

If your dragon poops while you are not there but your significant other is, and she doesn't like the smell, she can always go ahead and clean it up and when you get home, thank her profusely for being so helpful

I have 31 lizards. 26 are BD's. I have 2 ionic breezes but I think the most important thing is to clean the poop up right away. I never let a poop sit and clean it the instant I see it. I figure you're gonna have to clean it up sooner or later and it's actually easier sooner.

Do the ionic breeze units help?

I think they do. But not as much as diligent cleaning I'm sure. It often smells real bad when I get home from work till I've finished scooping and wiping.
