The Granite Mex Mex???

Jlassiter Mar 02, 2010 11:13 PM

Who knows how the Galvans eventually produced the Granite Phase Mex Mex?

I hear that it is a line bred trait, but I wonder if they began with classic looking Mex Mex....started seeing aberrancies and line bred for more aberrancies......Or if they had a somewhat granite looking phenotype they started with.

Right now there are 4 or so different "looks" to what we call a granite phase Mex Mex....I wonder if less speckled ones we are seeing are just in a different phase of line breeding and they need to be more refined before reaching that "ultra-granite" phenotype....

I am also curious if there are different lines out there....I hear all of the European Granites originated here in Texas (from the Galvans)......Did others produce their own lines?

I was told long ago by a buddy of mine that if you line breed the Split saddled Mex Mex specimens you will eventually produce a granite....I wonder if this is true.....

Back before my hiatus I had some nice split saddled Mex Mex but never got to see any eggs in 2006 when I paired them up.....

I did purchase a NICE split banded/saddled female from Mark Kenderdine at the Daytona show last year.....I am thinking of pairing her up with a normal or split saddled male next year or in 2012 and trying to line breed for some granites....

I wonder how many generations it will take.....Or if it will happen at all.....

I take it no one knows, cares to know, doesn't want to share or doesn't care......LOL

I guess it'll be yet another project for me to figure out on my own......

As far as I know your first post more or less hit the points as I understood them. There was some story about a guy in Germany not knowing that he bought back his own hatchlings in founding the line.

Yep....the German guy, Helmut took them over the pond and a breeder in Czech Republic by the name of Vaclav got some of his normal looking stock and eventually produced some by buying back his own stock.....

I was just wondering how the Galvan's produced them originally....Did they have a somewhat granite looking one or did they breed the splitbanded ones until a granite hatched out eventually?

Are the Galvans still around? Last I heard they were but real low key....
