Test for IBD

AndrewPotts Mar 03, 2010 06:10 AM

I see over in Europe they have a test that can be performed on snakes of all ages to screen for IBD while alive. Is this service available in the US...? Andrew

As far as I know it is not yet available in the States. My friends boa was diagnosed with IBD and had to be euthanized and a University in Florida that is working on developing a test for IBD(while the animal is still alive) was sent tissue samples and organs to further the research. Next time I see her I will find out exactly which University she sent them to. I hope this helps.

Actually I'm not in need. I guess in a round about way I was asking if it was possible for there to be a test to determine if IBD was present while animals were alive. I just find it hard to believe that the Europeans are that way ahead of us in that area of expertise. Seeing that the reptile industry in this country is much, much larger than all the overseas markets put together I thought something like that would have been developed here first. That begs the question if available in Europe why not available here..? Oh well just curious and hoping someone has the info on the real deal. Andrew

there are tests that can be done. Only they are very costly and are not always conclusive.

I was working for a pet store years ago, and we had gotten a shipment of baby boas in and after a couple weeks I had a feeling they might have IBD. They were sent to the vet and had many tests done and all of them came back with the diagnosis of having IBD. I appologize I do not remember any of the tests or exact findings.

As far as I am aware, some countries in Europe are much more advanced than all of North America when it comes to human and veterinary medicine. Not really a far stretch. I hope it's true!

I would be very interested in reading up on such a test. Would you be so kind as to provide a link. Thank you in advance.
Daniel.

Hey Andrew, if I'm not mistaken I beleive Jorn from snakeline has used a test like this. I think I remember him saying that all his boas are tested for ibd?

Thanks, Jorn e-mailed offering to help with all the info he has about the subject. Extemely generous of him and shows he's all class. Andrew
