Worried with my girl

Flavia Guimaraes Sep 20, 2003 09:18 PM

For the 2d time in less than one month my girl Spotty spent almost one week without doing her business! Today finally i found a tiny poop inside her cage what made me happy! But her poop's white part looked very weird, yellowish and hard just like a grain of rice! What does that mean?Cannot be dehydration because im keeping Spotty in my kitchen where the level of humidity is VERY high (no air condo)and im putting a large bowl of water inside her cage!Any idea?

Give us some more information:
eating habits
what it is eating

What are the temps

Stuff like that. That will assist in making some educated guesses. For now though, your gecko looks to be in fairly good condition.

Yes, she still looks fat and healthy but im worried with her "toilet" habits!lol! Once a week with a very hard white part is not normal for a 9 months Gecko is it?Well i have had her for 4 or 5 months, i raise her in the kitchen where there is no air condo and the temp is very high and humid (i live in Malaysia, an equatorial country). The temp in the kitchen varies between 81 until 86F.Please dont tell me that Geckos need 90F because i know that when the level of humidity is VERY HIGH the reptiles cannot tolerate very high temperatures! My beardie for instance starts to pant and becomes white when the outdoors temperature is higher than 90F.Not even my URO tolerates a temp higher than 90F because of the high level of humidity!
She only eats mealworms fed with turtle pellets, lentils, Ensure, tortoise pellets, iguana pellets, etc...Her cage has a large bowl of water, a hiding place, some calcium, a bed with a wet sponge, everything according to the book, lol!

Try decreasing the humidity and then get the correct temps. It is probably having a hard time digesting the food because the temps are not high enough. I dont believe high humidity would aid in digesting at all. Just my opinion.

I agree with Delta. One of the things a person needs to do before getting an animal to care for is to consider the needs of the animal. To expect the animal to adapt to a totally different environment than they are created for is unreasonable.

Leopard geckos require a pretty dry environment, something like 50% RH or lower. They may survive for a while, but will develope problems eventually. The operative word is SURVIVE, not THRIVE.

Would you please tell us what book it is you use as your reference for the care of you leopard gecko.

Book, no? I read several sites about how to care about Leopard Geckos and " according to the book "is just an expression!I think im doing a good job with my girl and if ,in fact ,her problem is what you said ill try to diminish the level of humidity and increase a little bit the temp.
I know that Leos come from dry countries and i know that where i live is not perfect for them but im doing my best to make her feel confortable. As the great majority of people in this FORUM as well.Including you.

Does she have a heat pad? I don't know, but if it's not producing frequent stools she may be having problems digesting, and that could be from not enough belly heat.

Anyway, I live in Miami and the humidity this time of year averages at between 85-90%. There have been a few days where the humidity drops down to 60%, but it's not common and there have been days where it goes up to 99-100%. The humidity inside, with the AC on, is not much different... but by being able to control certain things, I'm able to lower humidity in my leo tanks to between 40-60%. A heat pad helps, because it's dry heat. I use a fine sand for one tank and dry paper towels for my other tank. I keep hygrometers in there (cheap) to know the humidities and place them wisely, where there is good air flow.

The difference between my frog tanks, which vary from 70% to 90% humidity and my leo tanks is huge. There are ways to get around it!

No reptile vets around! The first time i took my beardie to the local vet he wide opened his eyes and asked me what was that!
