Temporary Keeping

tempo Mar 05, 2010 05:08 AM

I am thinking about going into the army and, of course, won't make any final decisions until I know I'm enlisted and what I'll be doing for sure.

However, I have animals that I love deeply and may have to do something very, very difficult for me.

I don't have too many. I have two dogs, two ferrets, a blue tongue skink and a ball python.

The dogs will stay with my mom since they know her and she has no problem with them. However, I am worried about my other animals.

I know of no one who would keep my ferrets. They may have to find new homes.

The reptiles are a bit easier to deal with, more so the ball python. He's a late 08 spider male. I was hoping that I could find a breeder to work with; they "board" my animal and in return we could arrange an agreement as far as cost and clutches go? I was thinking that they pay for food and space, I would pay for any vet bills(should it arise), and I get 1/4 of the cluctch? I don't know, I'm still thinking about how that would work. I posted something similar a few weeks ago, but in another forum.

I'm also worried about my blue tongue skink. While he's not difficult to care for, it may still be difficult to find someone to "board" him while I am unable to house him. Like the ferrets, my bluey may have to go to a new home. It seems like the python is the easiest to deal with since there is such a large hobby and a lot of reputable big time breeders I can trust.

I guess I'm looking for advice, comments, idea, etc. I feel horrible because I got these animal at the start of my college "career" thinking that no weird situation would come up and that I could keep them like owners SHOULD do. But something weird HAS come up.

Thanks.

Could you give us an idea of your location? If we know what city you are in, we might be able to hook you up with other reptile keepers who could board your animals while you are away. I think some breeders might be open to the idea of boarding your Spider if you can provide information about his health, size, age, etc. It will need to go through a quarantine period before being paired with any females, so depending on when you were expecting the breeder to pair him and how long you will be gone, you may not get any eggs at all.

Not sure what to do about the ferrets though. Seems like it takes a particular type of person to own and care for those little weasels :D
