what are the real leucistics?

hondorock Mar 05, 2010 12:49 PM

When i think of a leucistic in a ball python or any snake is a pure white snake with ZERO markings. I know Vin Russo's Leucistics (white diamonds) are the real deal and are the whitest snake i have seen, but I have seen super mojaves which everyone lists them as leucistics but they show darker heads and sometimes lines going down the back, is that really a leucistic? Also lesser x lesser produce leucistics, and phantom x to lesser produce leucistic, are those considered leucistics too?

Some would say that true leucistics are animals that have completely unfunctioning precurser pigment cells or precurser pigment cells that did not migrate from the neural crest. These animals should be completely white with normally colored eyes. Eyes should be a normal color (IE, not blue...) because eye pigment does not develop along the neural crest. Anything with color at birth or in the eyes is not a true lucy. (Note: Some patchy, spotty pigment may develop with adulthood. This has little to do with the genotype at birth)

Others may say that the ability for color cells to function and distribute on an animal is a sliding scale. So an entire category of white (off-white, piebald, and pale-striped too) animals would fit into the leucistic category because their precursor pigment cells are *barely* functioning.

My opinion is in support of the latter theory. Have a leucistic category that various morphs fit in to, but give them original names. For instance, instead of multiple combinations all creating Black and Blue eyed leucistics, these combinations should have their own name that would indicate the morph combo (and thus, intuitively, where it falls on the sliding-pigment-scale). MojaveXMojave = Super Mojave. ButterXMojave= Super Mutter? Something like that.

super phantoms along with mojaves x phantom = mystic potions and rousso het to a phantom.... also makes a animal very simular to the mystic potions... and theres only 2 of those in world at this time. and super mochas....are all blue eyed lucys,...along with steve rousis reptiles white weddings.. and all the animals you mentiond are lucys also super fires.... super embers.... and super sulphers...are all the black eyed versions of lucy and i belive the ivory is also a lucy and im probley missing a few others imo buter/lessers x mojave or super butters are the very cleanest of all of them.

There is a Lesser Pied in the classified section that is all white and it states has blue eyes with red pupils... it is really very nice. Most of the BEL complex snakes have the dirty head looks...too bad.
