When buying mulch at the garden center or hardware store rather than the pet store what kind to buy? Like a cypress mulch or a hardwood mulch? Want to compare prices.

I prefer Cypress. Make sure you get UNDYED natural mulch. I just picked up my cypress today. I think it was a 10 lb bag for 3 bucks... I am in the midwest and that is about average pricing...

Home Depot, Menards, Farm Fleet and Fleet Farm. I havent been in Lowes ever, so I dont know if they are in the same range, but that is the average price. Hell in a few weeks we can get it in the gas stations for that price too!

I no longer use loose substrate and for the past 6 years use newspaper. When I did use mulch for some of my snakes I could not find any pure, untreated cypress mulch at any of the home improvement chain stores or private garden shops. I was told by the store personnel that all of it is blended with assorted woods including ceder and treated with pesticides for termites. This is not good for reptiles. The only "pure" mulch I could find is that put out by the reptile supply companies: high price for a small bag. Bill

I use newspaper for my snakes. This is for my tegu and other lizards I was looking into it. I will have to keep researching.
