taming a sav

lrptls Sep 20, 2003 10:30 PM

my savannah isn't mean, hes still a little baby, but if i get my fingers or any thing near his face he opens his mouth. i'm really hopeing its just a phase and he doesn't do that when hes big. i'v been holding him every day sence i got him. i'm thinking of maybe trying to find sumthing that tastes bad n when he opens his mouth up at me leting him taste the yucky thing (they seem smart enough to learn that way) has any one else had this problem?

Exactly the same thing was going on with my little kid when i got him for the first few months. Try to get him to latch on to a towel or a fabric/soft belt and that after a few times will do the trick. Thats what I found n e ways.
"Mouze" is now 16 months old and 38inches long. 4.25lbs and as gentle as ever.

My sav was the same when I got her 4 months ago. I done the same and handled her every night with no great benefits then I STOPPED handling her for 2 months completely to give her more time to establish herself. When i offer her food i let her get a hold of it and then gentlty stroke her back for a while. Now she has calmed down completely and i can handle her no probs but occasionally she`ll hiss when i bring her out but the tail whipping and the biting has completely gone.

My other peice of advice is not to hand feed your sav but instead use tweesers or forceps because they are very intelligent and spot patterns quickly and the quicker you can stop your hand being assosciated with food the better. When i bring my tweesers out she knows its feeding time, meaning she doesn`t charge me when i go to clean her cage or her water bowl.

Hope this helps as this is only what worked for me, other people will have different advice.

All the best
