Why do cyclura take so long to trust you?For an intelligent reptile wouldnt you think it would less than 2 years to realize your not going to harm them?

"Cuz you are big and scary and going to eat him! Intelligent? Its a lizard. Those giant hands you have aren't helping calm him either. Also stop coming at him from above he hates that! ...and the baby talk, please. After about 2yrs they realize they are bigger than your mouth. Some mouths are bigger than others.
Eye contact is a big deal with cyclura. you can actually get quite close if you dont look right at them.

The pareital eye not only aids in thermoregulation but can detect movement so when you tower above that small Cyclura his pareital eye says RUN LIKE HELL AND IF IT CATCHES YOU BITE BECAUSE OF RAPTORS ECT ATTACKING FROM ABOVE...

Ive learned if you dont go in and pick them up then things go alot smoother.
I just let them come to me. First I offer food to get them to come to me and climb on me.After about 2 weeks of that ,they will just climb on up without food.

My yearlings do this, and even my 6 month old.

I just never understood reaching your hand in ,scaring the crap outta them by grabbing them.

jf,I know its a lizard we're talking about.Alot of people on this forum talk about how intelligent cyclura are.It seems like a long acclimating period compared to some other lizard species.

jf Mar 07, 2010 11:31 PM

ah, long time to acclimate for you, or keepers ,but this is a lizard that can live 50 yrs.
2 yrs is just growing up for them. be patient, its fascinating to watch the behavior, I think.

That is a really excellent point. Two years for a Cyclura is a shorter percentage of their life span than the few months it might take for a shorter lived lizard. They just don't grow up as quickly.

It's because your planning on eating them.

You didn't know it know it, but you are a starving predator, and they are nothing but mouth-watering cheeseburgers...

couldn't you tell by thier scumptious smell? lol

(...makes you want some wonton soup...)
