I've shown a pic of these two together before I think but here's my latest of the '09 brother/sister. From Burlington Co. NJ Red X Yellow. Looks like the boy will go clean white but who knows about the sister, sometimes I think red other times yellow...either way will be great. She is growing faster at this point.

I like how the saddles are so definitely black. When were they hatched and how much do they weigh now? I'm interested in comparing their growth rate to my Kingsville x Stillwaters.

monklet Mar 07, 2010 10:49 AM

Ha, you got me on the weight...gotta get a decent scale(s)...problem is you really need two, one for small another for big and I haven't felt lile spilling the bucks yet...but since you asked maybe it's time or well past time anyway. Here's the first pic I posted taken just over 2 months back on 01-01-2010. They were pretty close then.

btw, he's one of the ones I mentioned gurged last week so he's gonna lose some time for that and his layoff too. Sure hoping he'll be ok.

mattcbiker Mar 07, 2010 02:49 PM

Nice looking pines you have there! My bull regurged a couple times but she's been doing fine. I also gave her some time off and fed single meals for a bit.

Awesome, Brad, and interesting. As for her faster growth, does she eat more than her bro? Did you get those @ the Pasadena Show?

Hey Darren, throat still hoarse from the Saints victory?

They've both been fed at the same rate but now that the male gurged he'll be out of sync, but I'm pretty confident he'll come back fine. In either case, I think some snakes just get bigger than others.

Nope, didn't get them at Pasadena, the are F3 Burlington Co. from a J.G. pair bred by "PineSnake Pinney". Pretty special little snakes and I feel lucky to have 'em

As far as the Pasadena Notherns at Nick's table...I can testify, his are great animals. That's where my monster northern came from...although he has been off feed now for about 3 months Hopefully when he turns back on he'll start growing again...darn near 6 feet now at 1 1/2 years!

As they are siblings though, not sure I'll bred 'em. I'd like to ask J.G. if that would be o.k. If not I'll have to find another Burlington m/f to make a couple cuz I want to keep the line.

Cheers,
Brad

Your guy is 6 feet at 1.5 years? My southern pine is only 3 feet at about the same age!!! He seems healthy but this makes me worried. How often do you feed? I feed mine once a week but maybe I should try for more?

Ok fine just Markus.

The very existence of flamethrowers means that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves..."You know, I really want to set those people over there on fire...but I'm just not close enough to get the job done!

monklet Mar 07, 2010 08:08 PM

Ha, just under 6 feet, about 5' 10'. But yeah, must have the monster gene. I never pushed really hard. Let's see if he keeps growing.

I wouldn't worry about your S. Pine but my '09 is just over 3 feet now...just feeding about 6-10 days, that's all.

-- love that sign-off!

mattcbiker Mar 07, 2010 08:57 PM

How much do you feed per 6-10 days?

Well, as the snake grows the food items vary but here's my SerpenTrack (snake husbandry tracking site) records since I've been keeping them for my Southern Pine (normal)...(copy pasted from website so please forgive if formatting is funky).

Event Days Date Details Actions
feeding 1 days 2010-03-06 taken 3 mouse (small) f/t

feeding 11 days 2010-02-24 taken 3 mouse (small) f/t

feeding 19 days 2010-02-16 taken 3 mouse (small) f/t

feeding 23 days 2010-02-12 refused 1 mouse (small) f/t

feeding 27 days 2010-02-08 taken 2 mouse (small) f/t

feeding 35 days 2010-01-31 taken 2 rat (fuzzy) f/t

feeding 40 days 2010-01-26 taken 2 rat (fuzzy) f/t

...guess I lied a bit, seems like some were closer interval.

monklet Mar 07, 2010 11:32 PM

Just noticed in those records that one was refused...so I'm not a liar afterall...thank you SerpenTrack

Lovin2act Mar 07, 2010 11:35 PM

Haha glad you like the sign off

Oh wow so you give them more than one item each feeding....hmmm... I may have to try and do that. I have a gorgeous leucistic pine that I want to get as big as possible without risking long term health. He is a mid (September I think) 08 and probably about 3.5 feet I would say. What I wouldn't do though to get him 6 feet plus!!!

monklet Mar 07, 2010 11:53 PM

I have an '08 luecy S. Pine too and he's just about 3.5 now. He has always been an irratic feeder for some reason...on/off on/off...like he just paces himself. I understand what you mean about having a 6 footer...that's the dream alright...but good enough even at 3 feet.

Say, one thing I notice prior to his last shed, and well before he went blue, his skin started getting "peely", like flaking all down the top. I wonder if the lack of pigment weakens the dermis. Since shedding he is perfect again but we'l see. The shed skin was whole without any holes (no pun intended). Anyone ever notice this with luecies or any other snakes?

Lovin2act Mar 07, 2010 11:59 PM

Oh ok well now I dont feel so worried haha!!! Good to know that and thanks for posting it! Sorry to kinda hijack the thread here too

And YESSSS mine is blue right now as well and has the same feel to him!!!! So weird! He has been off feed for around a month and a half and just took a meal last week at last, but then he refused again for his next offering a few days ago. That time he was in deep blue and his eyes were fogged over unlike the last month, so I was more expecting a refusal, but the month leading up was kinda baffling as he has always been a terrific eater for me.

jepsie2000 Mar 08, 2010 06:21 AM

I'm having the same problem with my 08 Black Pine. She just shed and is very shiny right now but usually within a week a few scales turn color (greyish)and look like they are going to fall off, I just thought it was from her rubbing on her log...

monklet Mar 08, 2010 06:31 AM

Interesting about your Black Pine but not sure I would describe the condition of my leucy like that. On mine it's like very fine flaking of skin, sort of dandruff like but clear on the end of each scale. I've been keeping a piece of ExoTerra "rock wall" terrraium backdrop in the cage for him to crawl under and maybe there is a frictional component to that which has cause the effect. I've taken that out so we'll see.

It may also be a humidity issue but my humidity is usually of 50% and no other snakes show any issues.

Lovin2act Mar 08, 2010 12:19 PM

Same here...mine looks and feels like he tried to back out of a hole that was too small for him and all his scales are flaky-ish all over. I only notice this when he is coming up for a shed though...all other times he feels normal. I think your leucy is brother to my boy....you got him from Isis if I remember right...same with me Just found his record and he was born 08/05/08

monklet Mar 08, 2010 02:53 PM

Ha, sound just right...talk about siblings;0

...here he is.

I think the "flakiness" might have to do with the lack of pigment making the skin more delicate. I know that in birds, white feathers (also kertin) wear more quickly that dark.

Lovin2act Mar 08, 2010 05:29 PM

Haha no doubt I thought that too when I re-read the thread title

I am at work and cant see the pic but I'll check it out when I get home and post one of my little man too

And I think you are on to something with what you are saying there on the skin being more delicate with the lighter coloration. I'll be interested to see if the same thing happens with my newly acquired 09 pink pine as well!

Lovin2act Mar 08, 2010 07:07 PM

Yeah your fellow looks just like mine alrighty! If you look close you can probably see his flakey skin as he hasnt shed yet...any day now though. I only have my cell phone to take pics so my pic will differ from yours a bit color wise, but here he is:

monklet Mar 08, 2010 08:35 PM

Great shot for a cell phone. He looks puffed-up like some snakes get prior to shed...maybe to stretch the new skin, or loosen the old???? Anwyway, looks just like mine that's fer sure. Two peas in a pod. Let's keep informed on their progress

Lovin2act Mar 09, 2010 12:17 AM

Yeah was my blackberry camera...which surprisingly does a decent job! But yeah he was starting to get annoyed with me snapping photos of him in the bathroom, so that may have added to his puffy-ness

And yeah for sure would love to keep informed as they grow into hopeful 6 footers!!!!
