Help with herping in Big Bend

meme_cantu Mar 09, 2010 03:53 PM

Hi

I will be going to Big Bend parks area on vacation. I'm reading a lot scary stories about herping in and near that area. I would love to have a chance to catch and see this animals, but if I can not I will be happy with cool photographs. Do anyone has any experience or any advice? Never been to the area before

Thanks, good day

I believe its Pics ONLY. No collecting allowed. And you cannot disturb the wildlife either. just watch & enjoy..
Same as any National Park.

Thanks Matthew. I was thinking on photos only within the park and maybe herp a little outside the hotel, but it appears law is really cracking on herpers there, so I don't know. I did not wanted to collect, just get a hand-on thing with some herps, but well I might as well just take pictures.

Thanks!

When I went to Carlsbad National Park, I just took my camera & WALKED. All you can do. Actuall, its hard to see herps there as desert scrub was much thicker than I thought it was.
But that is what you will have to do. These days, I only collect pics myself.
Someday soon, Big Bend is on my AGENDA for sure.

If all you have is a camera, no hooks etc you should be OK. Now BBNP at night could be an issue, because if you do anything at all you will get dinged.

For example:

You decide to drive around at night in BBNP and observe animals on or near the roadway. You see something and would like to stop and take a longer look... not even getting out of the car you could end up with a long waste of your time encounter with the LE there. Now if you got out, you could get in trouble for harrasing the animal. And if you have any sort of hook or container you can get in huge trouble for hunting.

As a rule, if you want to look at night you will have fewer issues doing so in some great habitat that is not inside BBNP. But as you know right now it is not legal to take any animal from a public right of way in TX, and that of course includes our roadways and shoulders.

Anyway, come down, have a good time, and just be aware of the rules... many of which are not clear unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply brother. I will stick with the camera when and near National/State parks. I will try some herping on private land if the oportunity shows.

Thanks

On a serious note here, how is the security situation down around BBNP & surrounding areas?

There are some great ranches that HCU has under their belt, join up and help fight the road ban and get access to those wild private ranches!
