FireBelly Newts can't find food!! Help...

msazone May 25, 2003 06:35 PM

I got two newts about 3 to 4 days. I bought pellets for their food. I drop pellets into water, but they can't find the pellets.

The first time, I tried to drop some pellets near one newt. Finally, he ate one. After that, they searched in the water, but they couldn't find those pellets. Even the pellets just in front of them or even their legs touch the pellets, they still don't know that's food. I drop a lot of pellets in my tank, but it doesn't help. It only makes my water dirty.

How should I do? Also, how many times for feeding per day? Some one told me to feed them 2 times per week. Is that true? If they don't eat for 2 weeks, will they died? I heard someone said newts usually don't eat in 2 weeks when they move to a new tank. Is that true?

Thank you

First off, I love your picture!!!Second, why don't you try another food source like bloodworms. They sell the freeze-dried variety in most pet stores, but mine definately prefer the frozen kind (I have been unable to locate the live ones). It does take mine a little while to find the bloodworms, but I tried to point them out to them and they seem to follow my finger. I also have luck getting them to take a frozen piece of them from my hand. Anyways, good luck and be patient.

Oops, I forgot about the feeding schedule. I started out feeding mine once a day and they started getting very obese, so I slowly cut them down to every 3 days and they are much healthier looking now. They are always searching for food and will eat all the time if I let them.

Thank you

I just bought freeze blood worm today and one of them took a lot. Another one seems not hungry. I hope the little guy will take some food soon. Anyway, thank you for the info...^^

dont worry about them not eating every pellet you put in there i dont in fact ive only seen mine eat 4 times but ive had him for years. frozen brine shrimp is a good food source. but pellets are easy, quick, and clean. i'd put three in every week and leave em alone. they will eventually eat them.
